Stemflow is a hydrological flux that largely influences the input of rainwater to the soil and its spatial distribution. Here, we aimed to identify the factors influencing this hydrological flux by quantifying the stemflow of 129 trees in the Brazilian savannah. The attributes of individual trees were investigated as predictor variables influencing either stemflow volume or tree efficiency in generating stemflow-proportion of rainfall over the canopy flowing down the stem. The volume of stemflow was higher in trees that were large, had perennial leaves, and exhibited monopodial growth. However, the efficiency of a tree in generating stemflow was negatively correlated to its dimensions. The most efficient trees had a smooth bark surface, monopodial growth, and straight stems. There was large variation in efficiency among individuals, which is related to the high diversity of attributes among the studied trees. The small size of Cerrado trees explains the lower stemflow volume in comparison with trees in forest ecosystems. The efficiency observed in the Cerrado trees was also lower when compared to trees from other ecosystems, even in arid environments.
Background: Although impacts of edge effects on forest ecosystems are well known, their consequences on savannas have rarely been explored. Aims: To investigate the influence of edge effects on the plant community and microclimate of a cerrado fragment in southeastern Brazil. Methods: Several plant community variables (density, basal area, richness and cover by each vegetation layer) and microclimatic variables (light, air temperature and humidity), were measured in 10 transects across a savanna fragment surrounded by exotic grasses, and were used to fit semi-parametric models relating these variables with the distance from the habitat edge. Results: Differences in microclimate and tree communities were poorly related to distance from the edge. On the other hand, there were detectable edge effects on the ground layer community (i.e. plants less than 50 cm in height). Edges had a negative effect on native plants of this layer (density and richness of all species and cover of native grasses), while favouring invasive grasses. Conclusions: Unlike reports for edge effects in forest ecosystems, microclimate does not explain changes in this cerrado fragment. The most significant edge effect threatening the conservation of cerrado vegetation is the widespread invasion by African grasses. Starting from the fragment borders, this invasion causes changes in the structure and composition of the native plant community, thus jeopardising the population dynamics and persistence of native species.
-(Comparing techniques to restore the woody Cerrado vegetation in abandoned pastures). Cerrado restoration has been a challenge for science and practice, which depends on experimentation. We compared the ecological efficacy and costs of direct seeding in rows, broadcast seeding, planting nursery-raised seedlings, and assisted natural or passive regeneration, to restore the Cerrado vegetation in old pastures at Canarana, MT. After 22 months, we recorded 112 woody species in the entire experimental area, from which only 16 were planted, demonstrating the high resilience of Cerrado vegetation in abandoned pastures. Richness did not differ among treatments, but direct seeding resulted in high dominance of a single species and low diversity. On the other hand, direct seeding in rows provided higher woody plant density than the other treatments. The higher costs of planting seedlings did not result in either higher richness or density. Resilience, costs and the restoration goal (recovery, commercial exploitation, or biodiversity) lead to different decisions among restoration techniques for Cerrado vegetation.
