Room temperature lasing was stably observed in air from an orthorhombic crystal of 5,5'-bis(4'-methoxybiphenyl-4-yl)-2,2'-bithiophene (BP2T-OMe). A pair of parallel {110} facets of the single crystal acted as effective Fabry-Pérot mirrors. This prominent lasing is based on high group refractive index (3.5) and Q factor (4500) of the orthorhombic crystal resonator indicating a promising potential of BP2T-OMe for organic laser media.

We have studied photoluminescence (PL) properties of Eu-doped ZnO (ZnO:Eu) nanorods fabricated by a microemulsion method. The ZnO:Eu nanorods have a hexagonal crystal structure and exhibit a sharp luminescence due to the intra-4f transitions of Eu3+ ions. The excitation energy and temperature dependence of the PL intensity show that the Eu3+-related PL efficiency is determined by the energy relaxation process of excited Eu3+ ions, rather than by the energy transfer process from ZnO nanorods to Eu3+ ions. The energy transfer and luminescence processes in ZnO:Eu nanorods are discussed.

Blue-light emissions from electron-doped SrTiO3 single crystals at room temperature were observed. Substituting La3+ for Sr2+ and Nb5+ for Ti4+ in SrTiO3 provides electron carriers in Ti 3d conduction bands; these carriers are responsible for the room-temperature blue-light emission. This blue-light emission is essentially the same as that observed in Ar+-irradiated oxygen-deficient SrTiO3. This blue luminescence is independent of the defect type. The chemical substitution of La3+ for Sr2+ changes the temperature of the structural phase transition from cubic to tetragonal symmetry. The relation between the photoluminescence properties and the structural phase transition is also discussed.

We have synthesized a novel, two-photon-absorbing photosensitizer for two-photon-absorption photodynamic therapy (2PA-PDT). The molecule is a butadiyne-bridged porphyrin dimer terminated with two water-soluble porphyrin monomers connected through Zn-imidazolyl self-assembly and covalently linked through olefin metathesis. It has an effective two-photon-absorption (2PA) cross-section value, sigma((2)), of 33 000+/-4600 GM with 5-ns pulses at 890 nm measured by using the open-aperture Z-scan technique. The compound was found to generate singlet oxygen, cytotoxic for tumor cells in photodynamic therapy (PDT), under 2PA conditions by conducting photobleaching experiments with anthracene-9,10-dipropionic acid sodium salt (ADPA).
