Nos últimos anos a Reserva Especial do Niassa (REN) enfrenta grandes ameaças relacionadas com a conservação da sua biodiversidade, tais como os incêndios florestais, exploração mineira ilegal, pesca comercial, envenenamento de animais, conflitos homem-fauna bravios e a perda de habitat. O objectivo deste estudo foi de avaliar os critérios para conservação regional da Zebra das planícies da subespécie Equus quagga crawshayi na Reserva Especial do Niassa, que está localizada a 36o25’E de longitude, ocupando uma área de 42.000 Km2 em 1/3 da Província do Niassa e dois distritos de Cabo Delgado. A coleta de dados foi efectuada com o auxílio das metodologias de identificação da fauna com carros, procura dos representantes persistentes e estáticos e a metodologia de armadilhas fotográficas na qual foi recentemente introduzida naquela região. Na análise de dados foi empregue Software computacional de criação de planilhas eletrónicas Microsoft Office Excel 2010 e o programa da ESRI, denominado ArcGIS na sua versão 10.3. A Zebra foi encontrada em 5 das 6 classes de vegetação existentes na REN em busca da vegetação herbácea, água e percorrendo corredores junto com as outras espécies. Os valores da extensão de ocorrência (EOO) (que constitui cerca de 48,96% da área total) e da área de ocupação (AOO) (cerca de 4,62% quando comparada com a área da REN) encontrados neste estudo indicam que a população da Zebra enfrenta uma fragmentação severa na sua área de ocupação porque apresenta maior parte dos grupos de indivíduos isolados uns dos outros na sua extensão de ocorrência, mas também por necessitar de condições muito específicas de habitat e por consequente apresentar seus indivíduos em subpopulações pequenas e relativamente isoladas, aumentando o risco de extinção da espécie.
RESUMOAs florestas ribeirinhas são formações florestais encontradas ao longo de cursos de água, sendo caracterizadas por alta heterogeneidade ambiental e desempenham importantes funções ecológicas como proteger o solo das margens dos rios. Em um fragmento de floresta Ribeirinha ao longo do Rio Luculece no Posto Administrativo de Unango, Norte de Moçambique, realizou-se um estudo do componente arbóreo com o objetivo de determinar a composição florística e estrutura da vegetação. O levantamento fitossociológico foi realizado em uma área de 0,48 ha, onde foram amostradas todas as árvores com DAP ≥ 5 cm usando parcelas contiguas. Estimaram-se os descritores fitossociológicos empregados usualmente, além das estimativas de diversidade (H') e equabilidade (J'). A suficiência amostral foi feita através das curvas de rarefação e pelos estimadores não paramétricos Jackknife 1, Jackknife 2, Bootstrap e Chao 2 e ICE. O número de espécies registrados não foi expressivo, a curva de rarefação não atingiu a assíntota. Foram amostrados 688 indivíduos, pertencentes a 38 espécies e 18 famílias. Os maiores valores de importância foram registrados para Annona senegalensis Pers., Syn. Pl. (Persoon), Cussonia arborea Hochst. ex A. Rich. e Acacia abyssinica Brenan, Kew Bull, Dichrostachys cinerea Brenan & Brummitt, e Bauhinia petersiana (Oliv.) Brummitt & J.H. Ross e o índice de diversidade foi estimado em 2,835 nats.ind -1 (J' = 0,779). Esses resultados mostram a necessidade de conservação das matas ribeirinhas da área de estudo.
