Large areas of the Amazon are subject to seasonal flooding due to water level changes of the river. This ‘flood pulse’ causes rapidly changing conditions for microorganisms living in the soils which affects the cycling of nitrogen in the ecosystem. An understanding of the nitrogen dynamics in the seasonally flooded soils is essential for the development of productive and sustainable management concepts. We measured nitrogen concentrations, denitrifier enzyme activity (DEA), cell numbers of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria, respiration, pH and total carbon in the seasonally flooded soils over one entire annual hydrological cycle. By comparing three sites with different vegetation (forest, aquatic macrophyte stand and bare sediment with annual herbs) we assessed the effect of vegetation on soil nitrogen dynamics. Inorganic nitrogen was always dominated by ammonium indicating reduced conditions in the soil even during the terrestrial phase. Although conditions were generally poor for nitrification we observed high numbers of nitrifying bacteria between 104 and 107cells g-1. Pulses of ammonium as well as high DEA were observed during the transition periods between aquatic and terrestrial phase. Thus the alternation between aquatic and terrestrial phase promotes nitrogen mineralization and denitrification in the soils. There were no plausible correlations between microbial activities and numbers with soil physical or chemical parameters except a relation between the numbers of nitrate reducing bacteria and soil moisture (R2 = 0.81) and ammonium (R2 = 0.92) at one site. This shows the complex regulation patterns in this habitat. Different vegetation did not alter the general patterns of nitrogen dynamics but the absolute extend of fluctuations. We conclude that both the soil physical and chemical changes directly caused by the flood pulse and the vegetation have a great impact on microbial nitrogen turnover in the soils. The effects of the flood pulse can be buffered by a fine soil texture or a litter layer which prevents desiccation of the soil during the terrestrial phase
Denitrification processes were measured by the acetylene-blockage technique under changing flood conditions along the aquatic/terrestrial transition zone on the Amazon floodplain at Lago Camale~o, near Manaus, Brazil. In flooded sediments, denitrification was recorded after the amendment with NO3-(100 txmol liter <) throughout the whole study period from August 1992 to February 1993. It ranged from 192,3 to 640.7 fxmol N m -2 h -1 in the 0-to 5-cm sediment layer. Without substrate amendment, denitrification was detected only during low water in November and December 1992, when it occurred at a rate of up to 12.2 ~xmol N m -2 h -~. Higher rates of denitrification at an average rate of 73.3 Ixmol N m -2 h -~ were measured in sediments from the shallow lake basin that were exposed to air at low water. N20 evolution was never detected in flooded sediments, but in exposed sediments, it was detected at an average rate of 28.3 Ixmol N m -2 h -~ during the low-water period. The results indicate that under natural conditions there is denitrification and hence a loss in nitrogen from the Amazon floodplain to the atmosphere. Rates of denitrification in flooded sediments were one to two orders of magnitude smaller than in temperate regions. However, the nitrogen removal of exposed sediments exceeded that of undisturbed wetland soils of temperate regions, indicating a considerable impact of the flood pulse on the gaseous turnover of nitrogen in the Amazon floodplain.
In order to study mixing and stratifying events in a black water lake at the Negro River basin, we analyzed diel profiles of temperature and dissolved oxygen measured during the flood and dry periods of the 2001-2005 hydrological cycle. Tupé Lake is a narrow and dendritic black water lake located on the left bank of the Negro River about 25 kilometers from Manaus. It is "a submerged, deeply cut, V-shaped valley" or "Ria" lake, which occupies an area of 66.9 ha. The lake is directly connected to the Negro River for most of the time and is isolated for only a few months during dry periods (November-December). The surface water temperature and oxygen saturation in 24 hours ranged from 29.2 °C and 59.1% (06:00) -31.6°C and 74.0% (14:00) in flood periods, and it ranged from 28.5°C and 83.4% (06:00) -31.8°C and 124.5% (14:00) in dry. In the bottom, temperature varied moderately in 24 hours, with permanent 26.9 °C in the flood, and between 27.3 ºC (06:00) -27.4°C (14:00) in dry. Saturation levels ranged from 0.7% (18:00) -0.9% (02:00) in flood and 0.8% (14:00) -2.0% (22:00) in dry. A permanent meromixia was observed and t-student Test and k-means Cluster Analysis confirmed it, indicating statistically significant differences in the water column with a close surface layer between 0-1.5 m and a large bottom layer above from 3 meters.
Aim: Catalão Lake was surveyed between 2002 and 2011 with the aim of studying seasonality of the flow of nutrients between water, sediment and aquatic macrophytes. The role of the flood pulse and the ecological mechanisms influencing the forest-water interactions in the Amazon floodplain were discussed; Methods: Catalão Lake is located in the Amazon floodplain (03° 08'-03º 14' S and 59° 53'-59° 58' W), near the confluence of the Solimões and Negro rivers, approximately 3000 m from the port of CEASA, near the city of Manaus. It is considered to be a mixed water lake because it receives white waters rich in sediments from the Solimões River and black waters with humic substances from the Negro River. Physical and chemical parameters including C, N and P levels were studied in the diverse compartments, and a flux model was developed; Results: There is a strong nutritional (C, N and P) and ionic (Na + ) flow from the rivers to the lake. The highest C:N:P ratio was found in Paspalum repens which, during periods of drought, played an important role in releaseing nutrients into the water. The connectivity of the lake with the rivers ensured a high variation of transparency and nutrient content, fundamental for biological processes. A model of the nutrient flow, interaction and connectivity between ecosystems, and the influence of the hydrological cycle has been developed.,Keywords: carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, connectivity, Amazonian mixed lake. 25, no. 2, p. 169-182 http:/...
