Purpose Both developed and developing countries, Muslim and non-Muslim, have been showing keen interest in sukuk financing. This interest was because of the lesson learned by both Asian and non-Asian economies that having a developed capital market is very essential to enable an economy resilient to the financial crisis. Therefore, this study aims to produce theoretical relationships and identify empirical support for the determinants of sukuk market development. Design/methodology/approach By using panel data analysis, the study covers the period from 1993 until 2017, and includes 13 sukuk issuing economies as per the availability of data. Findings The findings of the study revealed that the stage of economic development, banking system, money supply and current account balance are positively associated with sukuk market. Interestingly, economic size and exports appear to be negatively associated with sukuk. Practical implications To flourish the domestic sukuk market, authorities need to strengthen the existing financial system and economic development. Originality/value The study contributes in a limited body of knowledge on determinants of sukuk market development by exploring novel determining factors of foreign capital inflows as well as macroeconomic and financial factors.

In recent past, the Asian economies faced various financial crises, 1997 & 2008, because of underdeveloped or small capital markets. Most of the countries continued to heavily depend on the mere banking system for sovereign and corporate financing needs which made the region repeatedly vulnerable to the crises state. Therefore, the last decade has witnessed the remarkable growth in the alternative arrangement in the form sukuk and bond markets. The academic literature on the topic mainly focuses on bond market ignoring largely the determinants of sukuk market. Using content analysis approach, this conceptual study proposes the theoretical relationships of sukuk with some new possible determining factors along with some other factors which have not received enough attention in the literature. The study focuses on the dynamics of foreign capital inflows, macroeconomic and financial variables with respect to sukuk market development.

Purpose -This paper aims to analyse the new standards on Sukuk which was issued by the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institution (AAOIFI) as a result of the strong critics posed by Shaykh Taqi in the end of 2007 that 85 percent of Sukuk issuance were not in line with the teachings of Shariah. Design/methodology/approach -This study reviewed samples of Sukuk prior and after the new AAOIFI pronouncement by focusing on controversial areas such as ownership transfer, pricing and guarantee element. This paper used content analysis approaches to analyse the pronouncement and the samples. Findings -The findings showed that there were negligible changes on the principle term and condition (PTC) of the Sukuk after the pronouncement, thus it did not have much effect in changing the Shariah Advisors and industry players when deciding more authentic principles and decisions. Originality/value -Based on the findings, it is acceptable that the advisors tried their very best in making efforts to minimize controversial decisions as to suit current financial practices.

Purpose- To diversify financing portfolio and reduce the reliance on the banking system, developing economies have realized the importance of bond market development. Bond markets facilitate economies to be more resilient towards the events of financial crises. Therefore, the share of the bond market in the financial system of the Asian economies has remarkably increased in the last decade. However, the academic literature on the bond market is very limited as compared to bank and equity markets. This was mainly because of the unavailability of vast data due to the absence of secondary markets for bonds in most of the economies. To fill this gap, this conceptual study postulates the theoretical relationships of bond market with various macroeconomic and financial factors. The study also assumes some new dimensions for bond financing and opens discussion for scholarly literature and empirical justifications.  Design/Methodology- Content analysis approach is used to review relevant literature for the possible associations of the bond market with macroeconomic and financial factors.  Practical Implications- The theoretical relationships discussed in the paper need empirical testing in future research to conclude policy implications. If the relationship between foreign capital and bond securities is established with empirical justification, we draw the policy that concerned authorities need to create a suitable environment for the attraction of foreign capital to provide support to the development of domestic debt market.

The present data from 194 customers of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is about their acceptance of Islamic microfinance in Kano State, Nigeria. The dataset includes variables such as gender, age, marital status, duration as customer, account operate, annual income, type of business, service quality, perceived value, corporate image and religiosity of customers in Kano State. A survey from March to June 2019, self-administered questionnaires were used for data collection. This data may help scholars to understand how people of Kano State accept Islamic microfinance interacted with service quality, customer perceived value, corporate image and religiosity.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the Shariah view on the legitimacy of requiring the entrepreneur to prove that he/she has complied with all business requirements in case the actual profit was below the expected profit in trust-based contracts such as mudarabah and musharakah. Design/methodology/approach This paper is part of the research which applies qualitative research approaches, including among others, content analysis, interviews, observations and descriptive analysis using fiqh muqaran (comparative analysis of jurists’ arguments) in few phases. Findings The study found that shifting the burden of proof to the fiduciary is the weightier view and necessary to ensure that both sides are protected. The considerations of protecting people’s wealth (ḥifẓ amwāl al-nās) and mitigating widespread greed (ṭamaʿ) are among the reasons for allowing elements such as ʿurf, tuhmah and dalālat al-ḥāl to be treated as bayyinah in trust-based contracts when the fiduciary is obliged to defend himself from litigation. Research limitations/implications The study is meant to strengthen the practices of Islamic banks world wide. Practical implications Few protections can be applied for capital provider. Social implications This study is meant to give solution in dealing with moral hazard of both parties, and to provide solution to the regulator for policy drafting and to increase confidence to the industry. Originality/value The finding is important in assisting the regulators in drafting the policy to protect both parties without neglecting the essence of trust-based contracts.

This paper aims to highlight the Sustainable and Responsible Investment (SRI) concept, similarities, and opportunities with Islamic financial institutions (IFIs), especially in Malaysia's perspectives. This paper is conceptual., thus the methodology used in this paper is qualitative, focusing on document analysis method by analyzing previous literature, books, reports, official website, and articles. Based on the analysis, SRIs and IFIs share the same fundamental aim, which is to utilize the funds with high morals and ethics. Besides, the analysis also indicates that SRIs and IFIs have shown significant growth over the last two decades and became the most rapidly growing sectors. In the context of the opportunities, both concepts can become a new value proposition and product innovation in order to capture the future preferences of investors and customers. Sub-Sahara African (SSA) region as a large part of the African continent suffers huge infrastructure deficit mainly as a result of the vast funding gap. The negative impact of the infrastructure deficiency continues to constrain socio-economic development and the general well-being of the people of the region. Heavy reliance on the traditional sources of funding by many of the countries in the region has failed to meet ever-growing demands for infrastructural development of the region. Potentials presented by Islamic finance are yet to be exploited by a large number of countries in the region. This study evaluates the depth of utilisation of Islamic capital market using Sukuk instruments as another source of funding to fill the observed funding gap for infrastructure development. This study finds that the use of Sukuk as a long-term financing instrument is still at its infancy stage in the region. The paper, therefore, suggests that the SSA countries can undertake rapid and massive infrastructure developments in the region through the use of Sukuk instruments, thereby eliminating increasing sovereign debt over-hang from the conventional debt market. This study also recommends that policy makers in the region put in place required laws and regulations that will provide enabling environments for effective utilisation of Sukuk instruments for infrastructural development. Similarly, strong political will on the part of the region’s political leaders is essential in nurturing strong institutions that can engender policy continuity to ensure effective and efficient management of infrastructure projects funded by Sukuk instruments.
