Resumen: en el presente trabajo se dibuja un panorama de la frontera y de sus problemáticas sanitarias, a partir de elementos habituales de la sociedad, como el comercio y el flujo de personas. Además, permite adentrarse en el proceso de deconstrucción de la frontera entre California y el Distrito Norte de la Baja California (actual Baja California) desde las reglamentaciones sanitarias en la zona, a través de la modernización de las ciudades colindantes que se formaron en ella.Palabras clave: frontera; salud pública; modernización; epidemias; medicina.Abstract: this paper provides an overview of the border and its health problems drawn from common elements of society such as trade and the flow of people. Este artículo explora la relación entre prostitución, enfermedades de transmisión sexual y salud pública en Baja California (México) desde 1888 hasta 1951. El autor demuestra que la legislación no se aplicó como una acción de salud pública, sino bajo ideas decimonónicas que culpaban a las prostitutas de la propagación de las enfermedades y priorizando en la obtención de recursos económicos en el ámbito regional. En la interpretación se recurre a fuentes documentales provenientes de archivos históricos y periódicos de la temporalidad estudiada. Se concluye que la inserción de reglamentaciones en la zona más que obedecer a una preocupación de salud pública por parte de las autoridades locales —municipales y estatales—, obedeció a factores exógenos, derivados de las relaciones internacionales que, tenían como eje de enfoque el ataque a la prostitución para frenar las enfermedades en ese tiempo llamadas venéreas en los activos del ejército estadounidense.
El presente texto es un análisis histórico de la tuberculosis en Baja California durante el siglo XX, en el que se estudia la enfermedad como un proceso aún vigente. Aunque los adelantos en la biomedicina y la salud pública han generado avances en el combate contra la tuberculosis, en la actualidad Baja California ocupa uno de los primeros lugares de incidencia de tal enfermedad. A pesar de que se han identificado las determinantes sociales, así como de que existe un tratamiento efectivo y una vacuna inmunizadora, la lucha contra ese flagelo está lejos de terminar. En este artículo se esbozan las características que podría tener un plan para la erradicación de la enfermedad, un conocimiento útil para entender las epidemias y los sistemas sanitarios, como mostramos a continuación. Este texto es un primer acercamiento a la temática.
