O presente artigo aborda algumas das características organizacionais da educação no Brasil colonial e imperial, a exemplo dos sistemas de ensino das missões jesuíticas dos séculos XVII-XVIII e das escolas de ofícios do século XIX. O objetivo principal é identificar algumas das motivações político-culturais que levaram à construção desses sistemas pelos luso-brasileiros, e analisar alguns de seus impactos na conformação da sociedade brasileira moderna, bem como perceber de que forma elementos oriundos dessas práticas têm ainda impactos sobre o Brasil contemporâneo e sua população. Para tanto, são utilizados como referências autores como: Eliane Fleck (2007) e Beatriz Perrone-Moisés (1998), que possuem produção ligada à história das missões jesuíticas no Brasil; José Murilo de Carvalho (2003) e István Jancsó (2011), canônicos autores que versam sobre a formação do Estado brasileiro e sua sociedade; e Dina Ferreira (2020) e Emannuel Reichert (2012), pesquisadores da área de educação que avaliam os impactos das heranças culturais escravista e colonialista no Brasil contemporâneo.
