Se determinaron propiedades físicas, químicas y agronómicas de cuatro sustratos obtenidos de desechos agrícolas utilizados para la producción de plántulas de chile tipo ‘onza’ como una alternativa al uso de sustratos convencionales. Se utilizó un diseño experimental aleatorizado (DCA), con 4 tratamientos y 3 repeticiones para un total de 12 unidades experimentales. Los tratamientos fueron: turba (T1) (testigo), vermicomposta (T2), vermicomposta + composta de bagazo de maguey mezcalero (T3) y composta de bagazo de maguey mezcalero (T4). Los sustratos evaluados presentaron partículas entre 0.25 y 2 mm. La densidad real en las compostas variaron de 1.82 a 1.91, la porosidad del aire osciló de 24-13.33%. Las plántulas cultivadas en vermicomposta + bagazo de maguey (50:50 v:v) (T3) y en bagazo de maguey mezcalero, presentaron la mayor altura (12.29 y 13.07 cm respectivamente) y el mayor diámetro de tallo. Las plántulas cultivadas en vermicomposta obtuvieron el mayor número de hojas (9.25), mientras que el mayor diámetro de tallo se observó en plántulas cultivadas en vermicomposta + composta de bagazo de maguey y en composta de bagazo de maguey mezcalero.
La disposición actual de residuos implica un fuerte impacto ambiental que puede ser minimizado al reciclar estos materiales. El compostaje es una de las mejores opciones para lograr este propósito. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo evaluar el efecto de la inoculación de Trichoderma harzianum y Aspergillus sp. en el proceso de compostaje de bagazo de maguey mezcalero (BM-Agave angustifolia Haw.) y bagazo de caña de azúcar (BC-Saccharum officinarum L.), ambos con relación C/N reducida. Durante el año 2012, en Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán (Oaxaca, México), se desarrolló un experimento bajo un diseño completamente aleatorizado. Se monitoreó el proceso de compostaje de BM y BC, inoculados con los hongos T. harzianum y Aspergillus sp., incluyendo un control sin inocular. Para ambos residuos, la relación C/N fue modificada con la adición de estiércol bovino. La duración del experimento fue de 133 días. Se registró la temperatura de las masas en fermentación cada semana. Se tomaron muestras por triplicado para análisis los días 0, 37, 70, 103 y 133 después de iniciado el proceso. La adición de estiércol bovino fue suficiente para reducir el valor de la relación C/N y alcanzar en pocos días la fase termófila. La inoculación con T. harzianum y Aspergillus sp., redujo el tiempo de degradación del BM pero no de BC. Aspergillus sp., generó mayor degradación en ambos residuos. BM alcanzó valores de C/N que la califican como una composta madura a partir del día 103 del compostaje, no ocurrió así con BC.
