Para obtener mejores resultados en las evaluaciones de riesgo ecológico y los estudios de contaminación ambiental por metales pesados, es necesario considerar un buen complemento de los miembros relevantes de los ecosistemas estudiados. Aunque se ha dedicado una atención considerable al campo de la ecotoxicología aplicado a diversos vertebrados, incluyendo a los sauropsidos no aves, las serpientes siguen siendo un grupo poco estudiado. Estos animales son depredadores de segundo, tercero y cuarto grado, cuyo papel ecológico es de suma importancia en los diferentes ecosistemas, sin embargo, aún son pocos los estudios en los que se consideran a estos importantes miembros de la fauna. En esta breve revisión se muestran algunas evaluaciones ecotoxicológicas de metales pesados aplicadas en serpientes. La mayoría de los estudios se centran en la determinación de los elementos bioacumulados en diferentes tejidos de los organismos, así como en la valoración de métodos no letales de muestreo.
