Bereits die ersten Rezensenten von Vanity Fair waren sich darin einig, daß Thackeray mit seinem Roman ein bedeutender Wurf gelungen war. Sie begegneten dem Werk jedoch auch mit einer Reihe kritischer Vorbehalte, die sich vor allem auf die satirische Haltung Thackerays richteten und die in ihrer Gleichförmigkeit repräsentativ sind für das Mißtrauen der Viktorianer gegenüber satirischer Literatur 1 .John Forster verweist auf die geistige Verwandtschaft von Thackeray und Fielding, hebt dabei jedoch zugleich Fieldings größere Originalität und Humanität als Unterscheidungsmerkmal hervor:If Mr Thackeray falls short of Fielding, much of whose peculiar power and more of whose manner he has inherited or studiously acquired, it is because an equal amount of large cordiality has not raised him entirely above the region of the sneering, into that of simple uncontaminated human affection.
