Une malédiction comme on crache sur le monde, ses progrès, ses nouveaux dieux et ses nouveaux prophètes : une malédiction comme on dirait « crénom ». On ne « joue » pas plus une race qu'un sexe 1 Il y aurait donc un problème. On a touché au corps. Des tribunes s'échangent de journal en journal ; des metteurs en scène prennent la parole, cosignent des manifestes : on raconte qu'une pièce jouée à La Comédie-Française est censurée en 2007 par un ayant droit (c'est évidemment faux, mais le mot se propage) 2. En cause ? La présence d'un acteur blanc dans la distribution pour jouer le rôle d'un Arabe, et le rappel des volontés de l'auteur qui s'y opposait. C'est un cas. Il s'instruit au tribunal 3. L'Affaire Koltès se poursuit en dehors des cours 4 , sur les scènes et à l'université-à chaque mise en scène ou presque, on l'évoque. D'un revers de main, souvent on l'évacue. Quelle est cette oeuvre qu'il faudrait jouer comme elle est écrite ? Foutaises. La distribution, dit-on, n'obéit qu'à un projet, et il relève essentiellement du metteur en scène. Un Noir, un Blanc, un homme, une femme, c'est un Homme, c'est un Acteur (une actrice ?) ; pareil au même ; bonnets blancs, etc. Polémique stérile ? Ou révélatrice d'un symptôme, celui du hiatus entre l'éthique défendue par Koltès et les présupposés esthétiques du théâtre aujourd'hui ? On taxa François Koltès-et par la même occasion l'auteur-de « racisme à l'envers » : après tout, les frères Koltès, disait-on, insistaient sur les origines, pointaient les différences ethniques et culturelles. Puis, ils confondaient l'acteur et son personnage dans une vision régressive ou « simpliste » du paradoxe du comédien qui est bien capable de faire croire à tout, même et surtout à ce qu'il n'est pas. « Mais comme par hasard, relevait alors Georges Lavaudant qui fut l'un des rares à défendre François Koltès, c'est toujours l'Arabe (le rôle) de service qui est sacrifié 5 ». Le dossier est-il clos ? Quelques années plus tard, on reçoit les lettres de Bernard-Marie Koltès que son frère François a recueillies patiemment dans un bel ouvrage, en 2009. La correspondance de 1987 et 1988 notamment est éloquente. Elle rappelle certains entretiens où Koltès se faisait plus diplomate, mais pas moins ferme. Dans les lettres, l'auteur développe une belle énergie pour demander, réclamer, exiger qu'on prenne soin de lire ses pièces. Koltès-L'injouable du corps Agôn, 7 | 2015 C'est qu'ici Koltès opère à coeur ouvert l'ancien personnage et oeuvre à sa radicale redéfinition. Radicale à bien des égards : le personnage y est pour lui, d'emblée, un corpset d'abord, seulement ce corps. Ce corps, pour Koltès, le théâtre ne peut faire que le montrer, l'exposer même ; passer outre l'exposition de ce corps-ou jouer avec sa représentation symbolique-reviendrait à le nier. Là où on voudrait voir un personnage, Koltès lève un corps constitué par celui de l'acteur qui en est sa surface : la présence du personnage tient à cette inscription charnelle, physique, infranchissable d'un acteur là pour l'exposer.
