O atual modelo de desenvolvimento produz exclusão social e miséria, por um lado, e consumismo, opulência e desperdício, por outro. Baseia-se no aumento crescente da produção e, consequentemente, do consumo. Da relação de interdependência existente entre os atos de produção, consumo e proteção do meio ambiente surge a necessidade de discutir o tema de consumo sustentável. Se pelas propostas de "consumo verde", o consumidor era o principal agente de transformação, pois suas demandas estimulariam a modernização ecológica das indústrias, com a perspectiva do "consumo sustentável", essa questão assume contornos mais complexos. Sabe-se que mudança nos padrões de produção e consumo implica aumento do nível de informação da população, conscientização das pessoas, eliminação de desperdício, desenvolvimento de tecnologias, responsabilidades compartilhadas, reciclagem, mas, acima de tudo mudança de um padrão comportamental da sociedade atual. No Brasil, alguns estudos acadêmicos já se dedicaram aos impactos da produção e consumo, ora buscando uma visão de como as empresas estão agindo em relação ao meio ambiente, ora buscando verifi car a visão e a sensibilidade dos consumidores sobre esta questão. A revisão da literatura aponta para um conceito ainda em construção. Contudo, são escassos os estudos que tratam diretamente das contradições e dilemas para construção do conceito. O presente ensaio tem por objetivo apresentar uma sistematização e estruturação dos principais conceitos, resumindo não só a literatura existente, mas lançando luz em duas vertentes dicotômicas: os defensores e os céticos no consumo sustentável. Para suprir esta lacuna e buscando-se alargar as fronteiras do conhecimento, este ensaio se propõe a mergulhar nesse campo ainda pouco explorado em nosso país.
