A Conquista da América. A Questão do Outro, de Tzvetan Todorov tem, como mote, a questão da alteridade, analisada do ponto de vista moral, através da narrativa e análise do que considera "uma história exemplar" (TODOROV, 1983, p. 4). A perspectiva não é, pois, a de um historiador, mas de um moralista, preocupado, antes de tudo com o presente. Este presente, no caso, é o ano de 1982, quando a obra foi publicada, época em que o tema da percepção do outro era de extrema relevância dentro da conjuntura geopolítica e socioeconômica: a cortina de ferro já apresentava rachaduras aparentes, a Comunidade Europeia estava em construção, e havia um abismo que separava o Primeiro do Terceiro Mundo. A Europa próspera construía sua unidade apartada das graves crises que assolavam os países latino-americanos, quase todos emergindo de ditaduras militares que os haviam sufocado por décadas, e mais distante, ainda, das nações africanas, muitas delas emancipadas em tempo recente, outras em processo de descolonização, e praticamente todas enfrentando guerras civis, cujos contornos eram de genocídio, dentro de um contexto de escassez total de alimentos, que havia criado um continente onde, literalmente, morria-se de fome. É com o objetivo precípuo de fomentar o diálogo sobre a questão da alteridade na época coeva que Todorov ergue sua tese sobre o desconhecimento do outro pelos espanhóis, ao narrar a descoberta da América e sua conquista; mas não só: vê no ano de 1492, com a chegada de Colombo ao solo americano, um mundo que era constituído de partes que não formavam o todo, fechar-se em sua totalidade.
