Background:Use of ‘Mishri’ (Tobacco containing teeth cleaning powder) is common in the central and southern part of India.Objectives:To study the effects of Mishri use on the fetus during pregnancy and the perinatal outcome, and stopping its use.Materials and Methods:All apparently healthy pregnant women were enrolled at 20 weeks of gestation from rural Maharashtra, India. Information related to use and giving up of Mishri, previous obstetrical history, current pregnancy, delivery and outcome during the perinatal period were recorded. Appropriate tests of significance were applied.Results:Out of 705 enrolled pregnant women, 218 (30.9%) were using Mishri. The proportion of women with complications during the previous perinatal period, complaints and complications during the current pregnancy/delivery and the number of stillbirths were significantly more among Mishri users. A relative risk of abnormal delivery was 2.7 for the users. In spite of counseling, 153 women never stopped the use of Mishri and gave birth to babies weighing on an average 169.9 gm less (statistically significant) than babies born from the group that never used it. Babies of 28.8% who stopped/reduced consumption of Mishri were significantly benefited.Conclusions:The improvement seen in babies born to 28.8% mothers who stopped/reduced consumption of Mishri by 32 weeks during the current pregnancy is of paramount importance in the developing world for primary prevention of low birth weight.

Aims and objectives: Early diagnosis and management of a case of B 12 and folic acid deficiency, as there is no gold standard protocol for diagnosis of this type of anemia. Case report: A 24 years G2P1L1A0 with 32 weeks gestation presented with: Hb: 3 g%, red blood cells (RBCs: 1700 cells/ mm 3 , white blood cells (WBCs): 2700 cells/mm 3 , platelets: 80000 cells/mm 3 .Ultrasound is suggestive of single live intrauterine pregnancy of 32.4 weeks, with cephalic presentation with symmetrical intrauterine growth restriction, amniotic fluid index (AFI): 7-8 cm. Obstetric Doppler suggestive of increased SD ratio in umbilical artery, reduced periodontal index (PI) in the right uterine artery.Patient treated with 3 units of packed cell colume (PCV) with 3 doses of intravenous B 12 and vitamin C injections followed by oral iron, oral B 12 , and folic acid.

BACKGROUND: Anaemia is a major public health problem during the pregnancy throughout the world. Globally almost half of the pregnant mothers are anemic. The hematological data representative of anaemia among Asian countries, India has highest prevalence and continues to be serious health problem. Studying the prevalence of Anemia in pregnancy aids in establishing the magnitude of the problem and helps the antenatal health providers in early detection and management. In a teaching hospital based a population study of Anemia in pregnancy is strong indication of true Anemia prevalence in the community, as large numbers of patients from different backgrounds attend the hospital. OBJECTIVES: The study was conducted to know the prevalence of Anemia in pregnancy in and around Bijapur, Karnataka. This study related with the Prevalence of Anemia in pregnancy in relation to age, gravida, parity, trimester and morphological types of Anemia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The material for this study is obtained from in-patient and out-patients attending the OBG department at Al-Ameen Women's and children's hospital, Bijapur Automated hematology analyzer -Sysmex-Kx21 and peripheral smear study were used to study the anaemia in pregnancy. 100 blood samples of those pregnant women whose hemoglobin was less than 11gm/dl were selected for study over a period of one year from January, 2012 to December 2012. The study was according to predesigned and Prescheduled proforma which includes detailed obstetrics history and systemic examination. LIMITATIONS OF STUDY: Serum iron, Serum Folic Acid, Serum ferritin, and Vitamin B12 assays, total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC), Zinc, were not done because they are costly and most of patients were from poor socioeconomic backgrounds. RESULTS: Blood samples of 100 pregnant women were analyzed & were found to be anaemic. This study includes magnitude of anaemia according to age, gravida and parity wise distribution of anaemia. degree, types of anaemia. Out of 100 pregnant cases, 70 had moderate degree, 12 cases had severe degree and 18 were mild degree anemia' Microcytic hypochromic were -70 (70 %), Macrocytic Normochromic -17 (17 %) and dimorphic anaemia-13 (13 %).
