Five aonla cultivars viz. Chakaiya, Banarasi, Hathijhul, Krishna and Kanchan were evaluated for shelf-life during storage at room temperature. PLW increased with increase in the period of storage in all cultivars (0-15 days). There was no decay loss up to 6 th day of storage, however it was observed on 9 th day of storage in all the cultivars and it increased up to 15 th day of storage. Maximum PLW and decay loss was recorded in fruits of cv. Banarasi (8.14 % and 38.97 %, respectively) on 15 th day of storage whereas fruits of cv. Chakaiya had minimum PLW and decay loss (5.83 % and 15.17 %, respectively) on same day of storage. Specific gravity and firmness decreased during the storage from 0-15 days in all the cultivars. Fruits of cv. Banarasi had minimum specific gravity (0.99) as well as firmness (10.83kg/cm 2 ) whereas fruits of cv. Chakaiya had maximum specific gravity (0.93) and firmness (11.10kg/cm 2 ) at the end of the storage. The present experiment was conducted to evaluate the different cultivars of aonla fruit for their biochemical and physiological behavior under room temperature storage and to find out the best among five cultivars for their shelf life under the Haryana agro-climatic conditions.

The present study entitled “Morphological characterization of okra {Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench} genotypes” was carried out at the Research farm of Department of Vegetable Science, CCS HAU, Hisar during spring summer season of the year 2012 on the basis of morphological descriptors with the objective to identify key diagnostic characters of the genotypes. Observations were recorded for 14 morphological characters. Analysis of variance studies indicated significant differences among all the genotypes for all the characters under study. Highest mean fruit yield per plant was recorded for the genotype Hisar Naveen. Serration of leaf blade margin, vein colour, intensity of colour between vein, depth of lobing and petal base colour distinguished all the 20 genotypes by assigning them key diagnostic features that would certainly help the plant breeders, to use these diagnostic characters for trait specific use in breeding programme. The genotype Hisar Naveen was found as superior with high mean values for internodal length, number of nodes at first flowering, petiole length, plant height and flower diameter were recorded maximum in HBT-1-1, HBT-51-1-1, HBT-70-1 and HBT-6-7-1 respectively.

The storability and sprouting behavior of three grades (small, medium and large tubers) from four Indian potato cultivars was studied under ambient conditions to assess the quality changes due to physiological losses and sprouting bhaviour of potato tubers. It was found that physiological loss in weight (%), decay loss on number and weight basis (%), sprout loss on number and weight basis (%), total loss (%), general appearance, presence of black or hollow heart were affected significantly by the different varieties as well as by the size. The loss in weight of tubers due to physiological activities, decaying and sprouting increased with the increased in storage period and the loss was more in larger than smaller and medium tubers. Kufri Badshah showed the best control over sprouting, whereas, 100% sprouting was observed in Kufri Bahar with all possible combinations during storage. The maximum value for cumulative physiological loss in weight was observed in variety Kufri Bahar (12.07%), whereas, minimum was in Kufri Pushkar (7.44%). The maximum decay loss was observed in variety Kufri Pushkar (7.89 and 8.72%) and minimum in Kufri Bahar (0.00 and 4.58%) on 80th and 90th day of storage period. Black or hollow heart was absent completely in all the possible treatments. So far general appearance of the tubers was concerned, the larger tubers shrivelled more and earlier than the medium and small sized tubers. Different varieties behaved differently during the entire storage period.
