La impactación es definida como una falla en la erupción dental causada por un obstáculo físico. Las alteraciones en la erupción de los segundos molares permanentes se han reportado como bastante raras. Objetivo: Determinar la prevalencia de impactación de segundos molares permanentes, en pacientes que solicitaron atención al Servicio de Ortodoncia durante el periodo de agosto de 2015-junio de 2017. Material y métodos: Se revisaron 2,968 radiografías panorámicas y se identifi caron 31 pacientes que presentaban segundos molares permanentes impactados, de las cuales se obtuvo una muestra de 41 segundos molares impactados. Con la información obtenida se determinó la prevalencia por edad, sexo, biotipo facial y clase esquelética, de igual forma se recabó información que permitió identifi car la frecuencia en relación con cada uno de los cuadrantes. Resultados: La prevalencia de segundos molares permanentes impactados es del 1.4%; la distribución por sexo demuestra que la mayor prevalencia corresponde al sexo femenino (53.7%) y para el masculino la prevalencia fue del 46.3%. Conclusiones: La relación con el biotipo facial y la clase esquelética infl uye directamente en la prevalencia de impactación al igual que los factores locales como el desarrollo y posición del tercer molar, el espacio entre la superfi cie distal del primer molar y el borde anterior de la rama mandibular, así como el desarrollo y tipo de crecimiento de la mandibular.
