Pregnancy is characterized by many significant changes in a woman’s body which helps develop the fetus optimally. During pregnancy, there is marked maternal endocrine upregulation, hormonal profile modifications and interactions leading to dry eyes. Pregnancy causes most parts of a woman’s body to change, and the eyes are no exception. Dry eye disease is a common pregnancy problem that usually begins towards the end of the first trimester. Since, there is a dearth of literature on dry eye disease during pregnancy in Nepal, a study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of dry eyes disease among pregnant women and to find its association with socio-demographic characteristics and their gestation period, at Nepal Medical College Teaching Hospital. A total of 84 pregnant women in different trimesters volunteered for this study. The upper and lower limits for estimated mean age were 26.67 years to 25.03 years at 95% confidence level. The prevalence of dry eyes was 89.3% by tear break up time test and 27.4% by Schirmer’s test respectively. The association between gestational age and dry eyes by Schirmer’s test was statistically significant.
Far migrated IUCD (Intrauterine Contraceptive Device) is an uncommon condition that has different manifestations depending upon its location. We present the case of a 22-year-old primipara who had a spontaneous abortion after IUCD placement and suffered chronic right lower abdominal pain thereafter. Diagnostic laparoscopy revealed Cu-IUCD in the right iliac fossa.
Introduction: Road traffic injuries are preventable yet one of the most neglected public health issues. Road traffic injuries not only impact the health of the victim but also cause financial burden to the entire family. This study aimed to find out the prevalence of road traffic injuries in patients visiting the Emergency Department in a tertiary care centre. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted among patients visiting the Emergency Department in a tertiary care centre from 1 January 2021 to 30 June 2021 after receiving ethical approval from the Institutional Review Committee (Reference number: IRC-LMC 07-J/020). Demographic information of the patients, accident profile and type of intervention at the hospital, and outcome were studied. Point estimate and 95% Confidence Interval were calculated. Results: Among 8,765 patients visiting the emergency department, road traffic injuries were seen in 112 (1.28%) (1.04-1.52, 95% Confidence Interval). Conclusions: The prevalence of road traffic injuries was found to be similar to other studies conducted in a similar setting.
Introduction: Hand washing is an important preventive measure to avoid transmission of Coronavirus Disease of 2019. Medical students should be acquainted with the World Health Organization’s hand-washing guidelines and should follow them to break the chain of spread of the virus. This study aims to find the acquaintance of medical undergraduates with the guidelines and to find out if they have started implementing these guidelines since the corona-virus outbreak. Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study, conducted among MBBS, BSc, and PCL nursing students in their first year to the internship of a tertiary care hospital from May 2020 to August 2020, and ethical clearance was received from the Institutional Review Committee (ref no: IRC-LMC 11-D/020) of Lumbini Medical College and Teaching Hospital. Data collection was done through online questionnaires. Data analysis of the obtained information was done in Microsoft-excel. Point estimate at 95% Confidence Interval was calculated along with frequency and proportion for binary data. Results: Of 462 respondents, 265 (57.4%) (52.9-61.9 at 95% Confidence Interval) respondents followed the World Health Organization hand-washing guidelines during every hand wash. Among them 172 (37.2%) participants had learned the guidelines through awareness programs. The majority of respondents belonged to 20-25 age groups, 275 (59.5%), and the majority were pursuing an MBBS degree, 360 (77.9%). Conclusions: We conclude that a notable number of medical undergraduates have been acquainted with standard hand-washing guidelines since the corona-virus outbreak, but some of them still do not follow the guidelines practically. Therefore, effective and impactful awareness programs need to be launched to improve hand hygiene practices.
Lymphadenopathy is most commonly encountered problems in clinical practice. Various etiological factors can cause lymphadenopathy. Cytomorphological study of lymphadenopathy is a window for diagnosis of many disease processes. Aspiration cytology provides a reliable, safe, rapid and economical method of screening the patients with accuracy. It can differentiate neoplastic from non-neoplastic lesions and therefore influences patient management preventing patient from being subjected to unnecessary surgery. Hospital based descriptive study was carried out in the Department of Pathology of a tertiary health care hospital in Kathmandu over a period of three years (1st June 2019 to 30th May 2022). A total of 331 cases of lymphadenopathy were included in the study. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cytomorphological findings of lymphadenopathy. Out of 331 cases of lymphadenopathy, 281 (84.9%) of the cases were non-neoplastic and 47 (14.2%) were neoplastic. Among non neoplastic lesions, reactive lymphadenitis 113 (34.1%) was the most common diagnosis followed by tubercular lymphadenitis, granulomatous lymphadenitis, suppurative lymphadenitis and necrotizing lymphadenitis. Among neoplastic, 40 (12%) were metastatic carcinoma and 7 (2.1%) were lymphoma. Among metastatic carcinoma the most common was squamous cell carcinoma followed by breast carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, papillary carcinoma of thyroid. Other metastatic carcinoma were small cell carcinoma of lung and melanoma. This study showed that cytomorphological study of lymph node is a convenient procedure for accurate assessment of patients with lymphadenopathy.
