BackgroundFacebook is a social networking service launched in February 2004, owned and operated by Facebook, Inc. As of June 2012, Facebook reports more than 1 billion active users. Objective of study was to evaluate the effect of Facebook on the social life, health and behavior of medical students.MethodologyIt was a cross sectional, observational and questionnaire based study conducted in Dow University OF Health Sciences during the period of January 2012 to November 2012. We attempted to interview all the participants who could be approached during the period of the study. Participants were MBBS students, while all students of other courses and programs were taken as exclusion criteria. Approximately 1050 questionnaires were distributed to participants. Fifty questionnaires were rejected due to incomplete answers, yielding 1000 usable responses for an approximate 95% response rate. Informed verbal consent was taken from each participant. Study was ethically approved by Institutional Review Board of Dow University of Health Sciences. All the data was entered and analyzed through SPSS 19.ResultOut of total 1000 participants, males were 400 (40%) and females were 600 (60%). Participants were in the age group of 18–25 years with a mean age of 20.08 years. Most of the participants were using Facebook daily (N = 640, 64%) for around 3–4 hours (N = 401, 40.1%). Majority of them (N = 359, 35.9%) believed that they were equally active on Facebook and in real life while few believed their social life became worse after start using Facebook (N = 372, 37.2%). Most of the participants admitted that they were considered as shy in real world (N = 390, 39.0%) while in the world of Facebook they were considered as fun loving by their friends (N = 603, 60.3%). A large number of participants (N = 715, 75%) complained of mood swings.ConclusionYoungsters are willing to compromise their health, social life, studies for the sake of fun and entertainment or whatever satisfaction they get after using Facebook. What we observed in our study was that although majority of our subjects showed multiple signs of Facebook addiction, they don’t realize it and if even they realize it they don’t want to quit Facebook and even if they want to quit, they can’t. Our observance concluded that majority of the users are highly addicted.
Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is an autosomal dominant condition marked by a lack of functioning C1 esterase inhibitor (C1-INH). In contrast, acquired angioedema (AAE) due to a deficiency of C1 esterase inhibitor (AAE-C1-INH) may be the manifestation of an underlying lymphoproliferative, neoplastic, or autoimmune condition. Both are potentially fatal. The C1q protein is normal in HAE but low in AAE. A third mechanism has been reported to cause angioedema, especially in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. AAE, which happens in association with SLE, may respond well to steroids. Here we present a case of AAE in a young female with SLE that led to upper airway compromise, requiring endotracheal intubation. Early detection and treatment of such cases can lead to an outstanding prognosis by preventing airway compromise and anoxic brain injury. Even though it is a condition of either very young or middle-aged patients, practitioners must be aware of this uncommon disease linked with SLE in adolescents and young adults.
Background With the increasing advancement in the field of information technology, it’s about time we realize that our future will be shaped by this field. With more and more people using smartphones, we need to adapt them to the medical field. Already many advancements in medical field are done thanks to the advancement of computer science. But we need to implement this into our teaching and learning as well. Almost all students and faculty members use smartphones in one way or another if we can utilize the smartphone to enhance the learning opportunities for our medical students, it would greatly benefit them. But before the implementation, we need to find out if our faculty is willing to adopt this technology. The objective of this study is to find out what are the perceptions of dental faculty members about using a smartphone as a teaching tool. Methodology A validated questionnaire was distributed among the faculty members of all the dental colleges of KPK. The questionnaire had 2 sections. First one contains information regarding the demographics. The second one had questions related to the faculty members’ perception regarding using a smartphone as a teaching tool. Results The results of our study showed that the faculty (Mean 2.08) had positive perceptions regarding using a smartphone as a teaching tool. Conclusion Most of the Dental Faculty members of KPK agree that smartphone can be used as a teaching tool, and it can have better outcomes if proper applications and teaching strategies are used.
Objective: To examine the prevalence of Hepatitis C virus in multi-transfused thalassemia major patients and risk factors associated with HCV infection. Study Design: Cross-sectional/Observational Place and Duration: Department of Medicine/ Haematology, Lahore General Hospital, Lahore, Pakistan for the duration of six months from March 2021 to August 2021. Methods: One hundred and sixty five multi-transfused patients of β thalassemia major were enrolled in this study. After taking informed consent patients’ demographics including age, sex, socioeconomic status, residence and blood transfusion frequency were recorded. Blood sample was taken from all the patients to examine the seroprevalence of Hepatitis C virus by using ELISA method. Data was analyzed by SPSS 24.0. Results: There were 113(68.48%) males and 52 (31.52%) female patients. 71 (43.03%) patients were ages >10 years and 94 (56.97%) patients were ages <10 years. 48 (29.09%) patients were found to have HCV positive. Among HCV positive patients males were predominant 33 (68.75%), 37 (77.08%) patients had above 15 transfusion and 11 (22.92%) had less than 15 transfusion. Patients with low socio-economic status were on high risk for developing HCV infection. Conclusion: It is concluded that Hepatitis C virus is significantly associated with multi-tranfused Beta thalassemia major. The frequency of HCV infection is quite high.
