1980-luvun lopulla Mihail Gorbatšovin aloittamat reformit mahdollistivat venäläisten rockmuusikoiden lähdön ulkomaille. Moni suuntasi Yhdysvaltoihin, jossa glasnostin myötä oli herännyt runsaasti kiinnostusta venäläiseksi miellettyjä ilmiöitä kohtaan. Kiinnostus ilmeni kuitenkin ennen kaikkea mediassa, kaupallisen menestyksen jäädessä laihaksi. Yhdysvaltoihin saapuneet venäläiset rockyhtyeet saivatkin kaupalliseen suosioonsa nähden suhteettoman paljon huomiota osakseen erityisesti maan sanomalehdistössä. Artikkelissani tarkastelen ilmiötä moskovalaisen Gorky Park-yhtyeen kautta. Yhdysvaltalainen lehdistö käsitteli yhtyettä pääasiassa kahden kehyksen kautta. Kehitysoptimismi kehyksessä yhtye kehystettiin Neuvostoliiton muutoksen symboliksi. Kehystä luotiin antamalla paljon palstatilaa yhtyeen kitaristin demokratiaa ja rauhaa korostaville kommenteille, sekä korostamalla yhtyeen taustaa suhteessa sen soittamaan musiikkiin. Toisekseen yhtyettä käsiteltiin kapinalliskehyksen kautta, jonka avulla yhtye saatiin näyttämään vanhaa neuvostovaltaa vastustavilta dissidenteiltä, mikä todellisuudessa oli varsin kaukana totuudesta. Kehystä rakennettiin korostamalla yhtyeen itsenäisyyttä ja neuvostojärjestelmän vastaista luonnetta. Molemmat kehykset tukivat laajempaa narratiivia, jossa Venäjän oletettiin demokratisoituvan ja siirtyvän amerikkalaismalliseen markkinatalouteen. Rock-musiikin roolia nuorisokulttuurissa ja yhdistävänä tekijänä yli kansallisuusrajojen on pidetty merkittävänä, mutta vaikuttaa siltä, että ainakin tässä tapauksessa muusikoiden lähtömaa, ja erityisesti sen poliittinen konteksti määritteli vastaanoton sävyn.
