The conversion from forest to grassland is drastically changing soil characteristics in Amazon, leading to land degradation when it is poorly managed. Chemical and physical changes of a Typic Hapludox were evaluated as a function of the conversion (by means of fire) from forest to Brachiaria brizantha cultivation. Samples from the remaining forest were also sampled. Treatments were made to pastures eight (P8), thirteen (P13) and fifteen (P15) years after conversion, and to land under continuous grazing, and to a remaining forest area (control). The forest soil was more acidic than the pasture soils. Soil density and Ca+2 increased after the conversion, regardless of the period of grazing. Carbon stocks varied from 31·2 t ha−1 in the forest soil to 37·4 (P8), 33·5 (P13) and 30·7 t ha−1 (P15). Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Critical levels and nutrient sufficiency ranges derived from methods for assessing the nutritional status of oil palmAbstract -The objective of this work was to determine critical levels and nutrient sufficiency ranges for oil palm (Elaeis spp.), using methods for assessing the nutritional status of the plants. The methods of mathematical chance (ChM), diagnosis and recommendation integrated system (DRIS), and compositional nutrient diagnosis (CND), besides the critical level obtained by the reduced normal distribution (DNR), were used in productivity data and in nutrient content of 144 leaf samples of oil palm plantations in the state of Pará, Brazil. The regressions of the DRIS and CND indexes with leaf nutrient contents were all significant, and the lowest coefficient of determination was found for N. The sufficiency range intervals obtained with the ChM, DRIS, and CND methods in the nutritionally balanced stands were, in general, narrower than the ones reported in the literature, with few concordant diagnostics, mainly for K. The critical levels obtained with DNR were within the nutritional range intervals obtained with the other methods. ChM, DRIS, CND, and DNR are suited methods for obtaining nutritional reference values, and they indicated N, Ca, S, Mn, and Zn as the nutrients with the highest frequency of deficiency in the evaluated oil palm orchards.
Abstract. Amazonian soils are heterogeneous. However, few studies have been carried out in the Amazon, mainly because of its considerable size, which complicates the collection of data and the ability to plan for the sustainable use of natural resources. In this study, the physical, chemical, and mineralogical attributes of soils in the state of Pará, Brazil, were characterized by examining the particle size, fertility, silicon extracted by sodium hydroxide, iron, and aluminum, and manganese extracted by sulfuric acid, sodium citrate-bicarbonate-dithionite, and ammonium oxalate + oxalic acid. A descriptive analysis, multivariate principal component analysis, and cluster analysis were performed. The soils had low concentrations of bioavailable P, Ca2+, Mg2+, and K and had high concentrations of Al3+, Si, and Al oxide in the Cambisols. Concentrations of Fe and Mn oxides were higher in both the Cambisols and Nitosols, which are rich in oxidic minerals. The multivariate analysis indicated an association between the organic carbon content and pH, P, Ca, Mg, and K concentrations. An additional association was observed between clay, potential acidity, and the Fe and Al oxide concentrations.
GROWTH AND NUTRIENT ABSORPTION IN BRAZILIAN WALNUT (Cordia goeldiana HUBER) SEEDLINGS AS A FUNCTION OF PHOSPHORUS AND ZINC LEVELSABSTRACT -The objective of this work was to study the influence of the zinc-phosphorus relationship on the growth, content and accumulation of nutrients in Brazilian walnut (Cordia goeldiana Huber). Samples of Dark-Red Latosol, 0 -20 cm depth, from the campus of the Federal University of Lavras, with 1 mg P (Mehlich 1) and 0.9 mg Zn per dm 3 soil. The experiment was arranged in a complete randomized factorial design 4 x 3, with 4 P doses (0; 150; 300 and 450 mg dm -3 ) and 3 Zn doses (0; 5 and 10 mg dm -3 ), with 4 repetitions. At 12 months after planting, plants were harvested, and dry matter of shoots, roots and leaves were ground separately for chemical analysis. Phosphorus application promoted increase in seedling growth and in the contents and accumulation of P in the different plant parts, but caused reduction in leaf zinc contents. The zinc-phosphorus interaction caused reduction in the zinc content in the roots, when in the presence of the different zinc doses. The zinc doses provided increases in both the level and content of zinc in the leaves and roots and reduced P contents in the leaves and shoots. The effect on the other macronutrients varied with the plant part.
