Abstract. Athletic performance and their relationship with competitive anxiety is a recurring theme in sport psychology studies. The idea that somehow anxiety influences on the performance of athletes has always been present despite not understand how this affects performance, and despite not having the empirical support. In this article a systematic review is performed using the database Web of Knowledge, in order to clarify the current status of the idea, which are the dominant theoretical frameworks and empirical say about results. A journey is made by the steps performed from the selection of keywords, selecting the database, through the sieve of the articles and the criteria for inclusion, reaching the final results, which indicate that there is insufficient evidence to clarify the relationship between sports performance and anxiety.
Abstract. In this study we analyze the connection between competitive anxiety (its cognitive and somatic factors) and performance in sailing sport. It has been typically accepted that anxiety is detrimental to sports performance. However, it is currently being intensively investigated whether the anxiety levels are always harmful to sports performance, as the data yielded by recent studies are contradictory. A data collection was carried out, involving 69 federated sailors from the Balearic Islands (Spain) with a mean age of 26.38 years ranging from 10 to 64 years. In order to analyze the psychological variables, athletes were given the adapted Spanish version of the Sports Anxiety Scale (SAS-2) and the performance of the sailors was evaluated. The results show that no differences are found in the anxiety levels between the high and low performance groups.
Much of the research on the psychological dynamics of performance teams suffers from the following limitations: consideration of only one theoretical framework and analysis of just one perspective (e.g., manager–coach or team member). To address these shortcomings, this study used a Global Cooperation concept that synthesized five psychological frameworks: coordination, cohesion, cooperation, integration, and identification. The objective of this study was to examine the level of congruence–symmetry between the two perspectives and the tendency for managers–coaches and team members to reduce cognitive dissonance in the perception of global cooperation. To this end, 108 managers–coaches and members of performance teams were studied (range: 23−60 years old) using a Cooperative Workteam Questionnaire (CWQ). Results revealed that the greatest amount of asymmetry was observed in Global Cooperation and Emotional Cooperation, while less asymmetry was found in Personal Growth, and good congruence–fit in Conditioned Cooperation. Results are discussed in terms of their theoretical meaning and practical implications for interventions on performance teams.
