Nuestros pasados de conquista, dominio y control se mantienen entre nosotros a través de señales como la educación masiva, el consumo, la intolerancia y el racismo. Los nuevos movimientos sociales, hoy concentradosfuertemente en los asuntos culturales de identidad y raza, nos ayudan a repensar una pedagogía que nos conduzca a una educación para la diversidad. El análisis de la realidad, el denuncio y la visión críticade los modelos educativos que poseemos nos pueden ayudar en estecamino, cuyas conclusiones no se alcanzan a vislumbrar en este momentode nuestra historia.
A constituição identitária do professor, sobretudo universitário, tornou-se, desde a década de noventa do século passado, objeto de estudos em diferentes contextos geográficos e sócio-políticos. Tais estudos se justificam pela necessidade de redefinição do perfil profissional dos professores universitários diante das novas demandas da sociedade, da democratização do acesso ao ensino superior, das transformações do mundo do trabalho, enfim, da mercantilização da educação e do consequente ofuscamento do papel da universidade como lugar de pensamento crítico e de práticas sociais inovadoras. O objetivo desse estudo consiste em analisar criticamente os modos como os professores se concebem e gerenciam sua profissionalidade no espaço institucional e, neste âmbito, como eles representam a pesquisa, entendida como fazer essencial do professor universitário, imprescindível para a configuração da sua identidade. O enfoque é exploratório, descritivo e crítico-analítico. Sua abordagem é de caráter qualitativa, com uso de questionário e entrevista, aplicados a um total de 425 professores universitários. Os resultados mostram que as boas condições objetivas de trabalho constituem incentivos importantes, mas não asseguram necessariamente um sentido mais profundo à profissionalidade do professor. A pesquisa ocupa lugar marginal por ser carregada de representações equivocadas e reducionistas sobre seu sentido e papel na universidade. A gestão da identidade requer, em última instância, a integração de aspectos pessoais, formativos e institucionais e um processo subjetivo de atribuição de outros significados, de natureza existencial e social, ao ser e fazer do professor.
