Resumo: A revista Candeeiro, da Seção Sindical dos Docentes, da Universidade Federal de Sergipe, ao longo do seu período de existência entre 1998 e 2016, desempenhou relevante papel de discussão na comunidade universitária sobre as lutas pela democratização da universidade pública no Brasil. A pluralidade das contribuições dos articulistas revela as disputas políticas e impasses institucionais no enfrentamento às políticas educacionais de corte neoliberal. Apesar de serem publicadas por um "sindicato de intelectuais", as revistas sindicais docentes não têm tido a devida atenção no campo da história da educação no Brasil, sendo mesmo preteridas. Esse artigo tem por objetivo analisar as implicações da reforma do Estado, de matriz neoliberal no Brasil e na América Latina, tomando como corpus os 22 números publicados pela revista, num recorte dos desdobramentos dessa reforma nas instituições de ensino superior.
Esse artigo busca situar o ensaio de Francisco Henrique Moreno Brandão (1875-1938) sobre a história e a geografia do baixo São Francisco no contexto intelectual das primeiras décadas do século XX, em Alagoas. Datada de 1905, sua contribuição pode ser inserida nos quadros das narrativas sobre as potencialidades do rio São Francisco, na segunda metade do século XIX e início do século XX. Inspirado pelo determinismo racial e mesológico então hegemônico, o autor manteve a ideia de incompatibilidade do sertão com as “conquistas do progresso”. Suas ideias se pautaram no livro de Albrecht Wilhelm Sellin (1841-1933), Geografia Geral do Brasil (1889), demonstrando certo descompasso com a moderna geografia da época, defendida por F. Ratzel. No embate entre as ideias modernizantes e a realidade da província, a secular dominação oligárquica preteriu as propostas defendidas pelo historiador para o sertão do baixo São Francisco.
