INTRODUCCIONEste estudio se propone trazar la teoria carpenteriana de la novela a partir de los postulados que se encuentran en las obras ensayfsticas del ilustre autor cubano. El enfoque tomrnado Ileva al planteamiento de ciertas preguntas, por ejemplo: JTiene la novela, como obra de ficci6n, una existencia aut6noma, o es ella parte inseparable del aparato cultural en el cual se engendra? Es su lenguaje, como sistema de signos, algo autorreferencial o parte de estructuras cognoscitivas arraigadas en la cultura? Si se considera al texto literario como una comunicaci6n, es decir, como parte de un sistena comunicativo donde hay un emisor (el autor), un mensaje (el texto), y un receptor (el lector), hay que analizar la funci6n de estos tres participantes en el proceso literario y la interrelaci6n que existe entre ellos. Ademis, es obvio que para Carpentier el concepto de novela implica una continua interacci6n entre sincronia y diacronia, entre elementos propiamente literarios, estilisticos, estructurales, temiticos etc. y elementos extra-literarios que influyen en la producci6n y recepci6n de la obra, y que la novela auspicia una pluralidad de elementos, tanto contemporaineos como hist6ricos.Alejo Carpentier es un escritor consciente, hicido y siempre al tanto de la problemdtica que enfrenta el novelista, sea desde el punto de vista de genero como desde el punto de vista de contenido. A partir de sus primeras obras, es obvio que ellas han sido creadas dentro de cierto perimetro te6rico postulado por el autor. En efecto, 61 parece esbozar primnero Ila base te6rica y luego escribir la novela de acuerdo a dichas teorfas. Este es el caso a partir de El reino de este mnundo, cuya publicaci6n aparece acompafiada por un prologo que elabora la teoria de lo real maravilloso en America. Aunque sus obras sucesivas no incluyen un pr6logo en que se explique el enfoque te6rico, no obstante, se encuentra una elaboraci6n de principios te6ricos intercalados dentro de la novela misma o publicados aparte en forma de ensayos. Por consiguiente, a lo largo de su carrera, el novelista cubano ha dejado un corpus de ensayos que elucidan una coherente teoria de la novela. El foco de dicha teorfa postula que
