A apresentação da presente obra, intitulada Discurso e Sociedade: a Linguagem em Diferentes Perspectivas, requer, inicialmente, a tematização dos três conceitos básicos implicados no título: discurso, sociedade e linguagem. O discurso é sempre produzido no seio da sociedade e se constitui como uma efetuação da linguagem. Assim como a sociedade, o discurso é atual, transitório e evanescente, ao passo que a linguagem, entendida como código ou sistema, é virtual e permanente, sempre estável. O caráter transitório do discurso e da sociedade, contudo, não pode ser tomado tão somente como uma fraqueza da condição humana, mas como possibilidade de fundar a existência autêntica da língua, visto que somente o discurso, sempre exposto a uma existência temporal, pode atualizar a linguagem enquanto sistema e tornar a vida em sociedade possível.Enquanto que os signos da linguagem só se remetem a outros signos e, dessa forma, fazem com que a língua não possua temporalidade nem subjetividade, o discurso é sempre a respeito de algo ou de um mundo ao qual se refere (RICOEUR, 1977). A língua, dessa forma, é apenas condição prévia de toda a comunicação, ao passo que, no discurso, todas as mensagens são trocadas no seio da sociedade. O discurso, portanto, é um evento que possibilita a vivência em sociedade e apresenta um mundo para a linguagem.Uma das principais características do discurso é a sua referência, de ser sempre a respeito de algo. O discurso possui um tempo, um sujeito, um mundo e também um outro, uma outra pessoa ao qual se dirige. Não há discurso, por mais fictício que seja, que não tenha referência, que não vá ao encontro da realidade, que seja somente para a sua própria glória. No caso do discurso escrito, do texto, há linguagem em utilização e, consequentemente, deve ter um referente.
