Thermal unities and yield of pearl millet genotypes sown in two seasonsAbstract -The aim of this work was to evaluate the accumulation of thermal unities (TU) and biomass on pearl millet genotypes sown in rainy and dry seasons, without fertilization or irrigation, in a randomized complete block design. In the rainy season, the BRS 1501 cycle was 76 days, requiring 1,239 TU, while ENA 1 had a cycle of 82 days, with 1,325 TU, both with the same biomass and grain yield. The genotype Souna III accumulated 1,352 TU; its biomass yield was the highest. At flowering, in the rainy season, BRS 1501 accumulated 517 TU, with the lowest biomass, while ENA 1 accumulated 545 TU and higher biomass. At the dry season, BRS 1501 showed a cycle of 80 days, requiring 1,123 TU, while ENA 1 had a cycle of 76 days, with 1,074 TU, with no significant difference for biomass and grain yield. At flowering, in this season, ENA 1 and BRS 1501 accumulated 447 TU and 461 TU, respectively, and there was no significant difference for biomass. The genotype ENA 1 can be used for biomass production for minimal tillering cultivation, and BRS 1501, for biomass and grain production, especially in the dry season.
A B S T R A C TThe objective of this study was to evaluate the agronomic variables due to the effects of different levels of defoliation in the phenological phases of two soybean cultivars. The experiment was conducted during the 2011/2012 season, in a randomized block design with three replicates, in a 2 x 4 x 5 factorial scheme. Two cultivars were exposed to defoliations of 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% at the stages of V4, V9, R3 and R5. The cultivar 'NK 7059RR' showed less sensitivity to defoliation than the cultivar 'IN 4990RG' . 25% defoliation levels reduced the yield of the cultivar 'IN 4990RG' , while levels of 75 and 100% reduce the number of grains per pod in both cultivars. The defoliation performed in the V4 stage lead to lower grain yield than defoliation in V9. The most sensitive stages to defoliation are R3 and R5, where there is a greater reduction in the production potential of soybeans.
A cultivar Preta Comum apresenta ciclo curto e as demais ciclo longo.
Soybean productivity under different grazing heights ofABSTRACT -The aim was to evaluate the effects of grazing height of Brachiaria ruziziensis on the production of straw, and the establishment and grain yield of a soybean crop, under an integrated crop-livestock system, on a typic dystrophic Red Latosol at the Experimental Farm of the Agronomic Institute of Paraná (IAPAR), in Xambrê, in the state of Paraná, Brazil (PR). The study was carried out between September of 2010 and April of 2012. The experimental design was of randomised blocks, in lots split over time, with five treatments and three replications. The following were determined for the Brachiaria ruziziensis: shoot dry matter weight, plant residue dry matter weight, and total dry matter weight (Brachiaria ruziziensis shoot weight + plant residue weight). Also determined were variables related to the yield of the soybean crop (number of plants per metre, plant height and grain productivity), for the crop years 2010/2011 and 2011/2012. Straw production is greater in areas of Brachiaria ruziziensis where there is no grazing compared to areas where grazing occurs; the high production seen in areas with greater grazing heights should also be noted. The final number of plants, plant height and productivity in the soybean were not affected by the grazing height of the Brachiaria ruziziensis.
Pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) is a major staple food crop in the drier parts of the old world, like Africa and India. Recently, its cultivation became more widespread in no-tillage crop farming systems in central Brazil, but it is also being used for cultivation during the dry season in other areas in Brazil. An emerging problem for the wider adoption of this crop in Brazil is the damage caused by the rust Puccinia substriata. This fungal disease is among the worst limitations for this crop worldwide. The rust occurring in Brazil was initially identified as the P. substriata var. penicillariae, but little information on the taxonomy and life-cycle of this rust is available in Brazil. The life-cycle of this rust variety remains somewhat obscure and the connection between the telial stage on pearl millet and the aecial stage on Solanaceae has never been experimentally demonstrated. Natural infection and inoculations under controlled conditions allowed for a complete description of all stages of this rust and the elucidation of its life-cycle, confirming that Solanum aethiopicum and Solanum melongena are aecial hosts. This coincidence for the alternate host and the limited and ambiguous morphological basis for the distinction of the varieties penicillariae and indica support the view that they are synonyms. Var. indica should be regarded as a late synonym of var. penicillariae.
