Education, and by extension, school-based sexual health education for youth, falls under provincial and territorial jurisdiction in Canada, creating a tapestry of educational experiences across the country. Previous research has found general support for provid ing sexual health education in schools as reported by teachers, parents, and college/university students. The current study further explores this topic through an examination of the perspectives and opinions of high-school aged youth. The purpose of this study was to develop knowledge to better understand sexual health education experiences in Canada and help determine the extent to which youth feel informed and well supported to develop and maintain their sexual health and participate in healthy sexual and/ or romantic relationships. Twelve focus groups were conducted with youth (ages 12-19) across Canada and the transcripts were analyzed using thematic analysis. A total of 10 themes were identified related to what and how youth would like to learn, including four themes about the context and delivery of sexual health education and six themes about the content of sexual health education. Study findings highlight the need for youth perspectives when developing, implementing and evaluating sexual health education and provide insight to help inform recommendations for where educational improvements are warranted.
Both new palaeontological and embryological evidence on chordates require a reassessment of traditional ideas on their early phylogeny and on the evolution of their Bauplan and tissues. A revision of the available data from both palaeontological and zoological points of view is useful both to clarify the better justified possible hypotheses and to point to the more profitable lines of investigation for further advancing our understanding of these problems. Recent advances in the knowledge of the morphology of Cambrian protochordates and of conodonts provide significant evidence for the understanding of the earliest phases of development of typical vertebrate morphology. It appears that, in the oldest lineages related with the evolution of vertebrates, mineralized tissues may have been restricted to the bucco-pharyngeal region and be of ectodermal and ectomesenchymal origin. The development of dermal and visceral skeletal structures in living vertebrates further supports the overall significance of ectodermal-ectomesenchymal interactions as the first step towards the origin of the vertebrate skeleton.
Folk devils" is a term coined by Stanley Cohen (1972) to characterize social groups who come to be seen as threats to society. The concept has been theorized in many ways-from showcasing voiceless outsiders, to outspoken individuals defending themselves. The thesis troubles Cohen's original concept by showing an emerging folk devil narrative of redemption, examined through the case studies of two anti-vaxxer mothers who publically confess wrongdoing of their previous anti-vaccination stance. These acts of public confession, I show, are highly mediatized. Drawing from McAdams's (2006) theory of narrative identity, I pose critical questions of how redemption narratives not only challenge previous notions of folk devils, but also explore how they impact discourses of moral regulation. This study finds that folk devil redemption narratives illustrate identity reconstruction through the liminal state of exiting, imply self-policing mechanisms of conformity, and specifically with regard to the topic of the case studies, offer effective anecdotal strategies for vaccine promotion.iii Thank you all! iv
