. Influence of citric acid and water on thermoplastic wheat flour/poly(lactic acid) blends. I: Thermal, mechanical and morphological properties. Industrial Crops and Products, Elsevier, 2012, vol. 37, pp. 238-246 Wheat flour was plasticized with glycerol and compounded with poly(lactic acid) in a one-step twinscrew extrusion process in the presence of citric acid with or without extra water. The influence of these additives on process parameters and thermal, mechanical and morphological properties of injected samples from the prepared blends, was then studied. Citric acid acted as a compatibilizer by promoting depolymerization of both starch and PLA. For an extrusion without extra water, the amount of citric acid (2 parts for 75 parts of flour, 25 parts of PLA and 15 parts of glycerol) has to be limited to avoid mechanical properties degradation. Water, added during the extrusion, improved the whole process, minimizing PLA depolymerization, favoring starch plasticization by citric acid and thus improving phases repartition.
Film extrusion of sunflower protein isolate (SFPI) was studied. The influence of die temperature (85-160°C), water and glycerol contents were investigated through appearance, mechanical and thermomechanical properties, and swelling behavior in water of films. It was demonstrated that highest temperature, well above SFPI denaturation temperature in the compound, highest glycerol content (70 parts for 100 parts of SFPI), and medium water content (20 parts for 100 parts of SFPI) gave the most regular and smoothest film (as seen on SEM micrographs). Its ultimate tensile strength, Young's modulus, and strain at break were, respectively, 3.2 MPa, 17.7 MPa, and 73%. Soaked in water, its swelling was about 186% w/w but the film was quiet insoluble. Effect of temperature and plasticizer content were discussed in relation to the kinetic of SFPI denaturation. Through a twin-screw extrusion process the native structure of sunflower oil cake was completely transformed (globular protein denaturation/texturization and husk fiber defibration) into a simpler matrix-fiber structure, as could be seen on SEM micrographs. Further chemical reduction of protein disulfide bridges greatly reduced the melt viscosity of the moistened composite that it could be injection-molded. The molded specimens were tested and their tensile and flexural properties and water absorption calculated. Their water resistance appeared to be particularly high, and could be enhanced further after a thermal treatment (N 2 , 200°C). The proteic matrix seemed to behave like a natural thermoset resin. Sunflower oil cake could be used without any additives to make biodegradable, water resistant and exceptionally cheap materials.
Facing the problems of plastic recycling and fossil resources exhaustion, the use of biomass to conceive new materials appears like a reasonable solution. Two axes of research are nowadays developed : on the one hand the synthesis of biodegradable plastics, whichever the methods may be, on the other hand the utilization of raw biopolymers, which is the object of this paper. From this perspective, the "plastic" properties of natural polymers, the caracteristics of the different classes of polymers, the use of charge in vegetable matrix and the possible means of improving the durability of these agro-materials are reviewed.
The building sector is constantly innovating in its use of materials with regards to sustainability. There is a need to use cost effective, environmentally friendly materials and technologies which lessen the impact of a construction in terms of its use of non renewable resources and energy consumption. Cellulose fibre insulation is an eco friendly thermal insulation material made from recycled paper fibres. It offers good thermal properties and has a low embodied energy. However due to lack of expertise in its application and properties, cellulose insulation is not widely used in comparison to more traditional insulation materials. The present paper reviews the available research on cellulose fibre insulation, its manufacture, installation, and performance. The paper focuses the physical properties of cellulose insulation, the environmental factors that affect these properties, and possible means of future innovation.
