VATS is an effective, safe method for spontaneous pneumothorax in children. In 11 children with pneumothorax, we made a wedge resection of the apical part of the lung with an endostapler device plus mechanical pleurodesis.
Papillary cystic neoplasm is a rare tumor and is usually found in young female patients. Procedure: Here we describe a rare case of PCN in 16year old girl, which was presented with abdominal pain in last 3 years. Preoperative diagnosis was suggested by ECHO and CT of the abdomen. The sonographic examination of the abdomen showed a tumor measuring 6.5 x 5.5cm in diameter in epigastrium. It was excised totally. Histological description confirmed the diagnosis of PCN. The patient is currently in good health without signs of relapse 3 years after surgery. Discussion: Our patient is one of the very few adolescent patients with PCN who was treated successfully with surgery. ECHO and CT of the abdomen suggested the diagnosis which was confirmed by histopatological examination. Conclusion: The diagnosis of PCN is suspected by ECHO and CT of the abdomen and confirmed by specific histologic features. Prognosis is good and tumor should be excised whenever detected.
To the Editor: Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) of the hand is so rare, especially in children, that its occurrence has not been recognized in the hand literature until the work of Potenza and Winslow in 1961 [1,2]. Our experience with a 4-year-old girl with a 2 Â 2-cm alveolar RMS of the palm of the left hand (hypothenar eminence) is therefore of interest. The mass was watched for 6 months, and neither increased nor decreased in size. There was no local or distant lymphadenopathy. Routine hematologic investigations and plain X-ray ®lms were normal. Bone marrow evaluation, ultrasound of the abdomen, and chest X-ray ®lms were unremarkable. An excisional biopsy of the tumor and node dissection was performed, and histological analysis revealed an alveolar RMS without lymph node involvement. The patient underwent chemotherapy one month after surgery and received 8 cycles of ifosfamide, vincristine, actinomycind. Two yearslater, she remains well without functional loss or cosmetic de®cit. The outcome in our patient is encouraging, because the alveolar hystologic subtype of RMS has been generally associated with a poorer prognosis, as has RMS in the extremities [
