This paper traces the development of reliability engineering for electronic equipment. It discusses the trends affecting the discipline, some benchmark efforts, and their results. Reliability engineering has reflected the greater trends of history, and shown its value under a variety of political, economic, and social situations. Significant current developments include the end of the historical trend towards constantly increasing reliability in devices, a growing concern for software reliability, and initiatives to overcome the persistent prob lem of inadequate emphasis on reliability by program managers. Pro jected for the future is the integration of reliability engineering with computer aided design.
Three patients receiving diphenylhydantoin (DPH) were seen with a reversible process suggesting mycosis fungoides. Clinical and laboratory manifestations included generalized pruritic exfoliative erythroderma, eosinophilia, lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, circulating Sézary cells, epidermal Pautrier's microabscesses on skin biopsy, and moderate liver dysfunction. Studies of the distribution and function of the various lymphocyte subpopulations from these patients showed: (1) an increase in the relative and absolute number of T lymphocytes (85–92%); (2) significant stimulation of lymphocyte‐blastic transformation by DPH and low response to pokeweed mitogen stimultion; (3) the impaired ability of Tγ lymphocytes to suppress B‐cell differentiation and immunoglobulin production. With only one exception, 15 symptom‐free patients on DPH showed none of these abnormalities. The clinical manifestations and immunologic abnormalities of patients with this pseudo mycosis fungoides syndrome remitted three to four weeks after DPH administration was discontinued. The proliferation of T lymphocytes and the inhibition of the function of Tγ‐suppressor lymphocytes noted in these patients may be significant to the development of other types of pseudolymphoma and to that of true lymphoma.
Two cases of intranasal benzodiazepine use are presented. The methods of preparation and administration of the powder and accounts of the pharmacological effects of the drugs used are described. The pattern of development and progress of the habit and its associated features are delineated. Snorting benzodiazepines appears to be more common than is currently appreciated, and the clinical complications and implications of this habit are discussed.
In this paper, the Real World Design Challenge (RWDC) competition is discussed in detail. This paper highlights the need, history, and approach taken for the design of the challenge. The authors discuss how this challenge promotes Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and provides opportunities for high school students to acquire knowledge and experience beyond their traditional curriculum. The challenge is based around a real world problem. Students are asked to work in teams to find feasible solutions for the identified problem. The process for developing the challenge, student engagement, learning opportunities, student evaluations, publicity and recruitment efforts, design objective and timeline, and assessment metrics are some of the topics discussed. In this paper, the lessons learned from developing and running the challenge are also addressed.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
