Purpose: This study retrospectively evaluated the prevalence of changesin the nasal cavity through panoramic radiographic examination (PAN) andmedical records of patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. Materialand methods: The medical records and PAN of 121 patients with a meanage of 19.8 ± 8.0 years were analyzed. For the analysis of the nasal cavity, the bony limits of the piriform opening, nasal septum and the limits of thenasal conchae were traced; a vertical line was drawn considering the nasalseptum and another horizontal line referring to the nasal floor. To analyzethe nasal septum deviation (NSD), in its anterior portion, the vertical linewas taken as a basis; while for the analysis of nasal turbinate hypertrophy(NTH), a significant reduction in air space light was considered. Results:Anatomical changes in the nasal cavity were identified in more than 41%of PANs; while more than 33% of the sample registered some functionalalteration (breathing, phonation or swallowing). A significantly higherprevalence of DSN and HCN was found for cases with functional changesand self-declared brown / black patients (p <0.001). However, therewere no differences regarding the gender and age of the sample (p> 0.05).Conclusion: Functional changes and nasal obstruction resulting from DSNand HCN can contribute to the occurrence of pathologies and developmentalchanges in the craniofacial complex. In this context, PAN is shownto be viable as an auxiliary tool in the diagnostic process.
