Kestävän työn kysymyksiä on kiinnostavaa lähestyä osuustoiminnan näkökulmasta, sillä osuuskuntia yritysmuotona luonnehtii usein jäsendemokratiasta juontuva tarvelähtöisyys ja muun kuin voiton tavoittelu. Tässä artikkelissa tarkastelen neljän melko pienen ja uuden osuuskunnan jäsenten teemahaastatteluja lähilukien, miten neuvottelu erilaisista, kestävän hyvinvoinnin HDLB-mallin avulla jäsennellyistä, tarpeista muovaa osuuskunnissa tehtävää moninaista työtä. Kestävän työn kannalta lupaavia piirteitä osuuskunnissa voi kuvata vastuulliseksi tekemiseksi, jossa tarpeiden tunnistaminen rakentaa merkityksellisiä suhteita sekä jäsenten kesken että paljon välitöntä työyhteisöä laajemmalle, ja vastuuta ottavat aktiiviset jäsenet oppivat keskinäisen toimeentulon ja yhteisen vallankäytön taitoja. Molempiin puoliin liittyy myös ristiriitojen työstämistä. Voittoa tavoittelematon liiketoiminta voisi yleensä ottaen mahdollistaa riittävän toimeentulon matalammalla tuotannon tasolla ja vähemmän ympäristöhaittoja aiheuttaen. Kestävän hyvinvoinnin pitäminen keskeisenä taloudellisen toiminnan tavoitteena voisi edesauttaa erilaisten työn muotojen arvostamista laajemmin kuin niiden rahallisten tuottojen perusteella, kun taas kaikenlaisen työn tarkasteleminen lähtökohtaisen moniaineksisena ja jatkuvasti neuvoteltavana auttaisi havaitsemaan vahvistamisen arvoisia käytäntöjä missä vain.
