Stunting is one of Indonesia's problems, as portrayed in RISKESDAS 2018. This means the growth of Indonesian children was not optimal. Some factors that might affect body height growth were genetic factors, represented by mid-parental height, nutritional factors, especially calcium, and physical activity, which could activate pathways to stimulate growth. These factors were known to have a huge role in body height growth, especially if these factors were optimized in adolescence, as in high school students. This research aimed to explain the relationship between body height growth and the factors that might affect it: mid-parental height, calcium intake, and the intensity of physical activity. This research was observational analytic, using purposive sampling as the sampling method and collecting data using a cross-sectional questionnaire. Statistical analysis between variables shows that mid-parental height was positively related (p<0.05, r: 0,356), while calcium supplementation was not associated (p<0.05, r: -0.165), and intensity of physical activity was not related (p=0.059, r: 0.089) with the body height growth of the students. In conclusion, among the factors that were analyzed, mid-parental height was the only one that had a relationship with body height growth.
Macular degeneration or often called Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a degenerative disease that attacks the center of vision in the retina, namely the macula. In an effort to prevent the progression of AMD, consuming antioxidants has been shown to inhibit the AMD development process. Although currently there is no definite number of AMD sufferers in Indonesia, it is estimated that the number of AMD sufferers will continue to increase. Carotenoids are one of the antioxidant compounds that have been shown to inhibit the development of macular degeneration. Carotenoids are divided into several classes, one of which is the xanthophyll class. Lutein and zeaxanthin compounds belong to the xanthophyll class. The content of lutein and zeaxanthin in body plasma has been shown to reduce the risk of macular diseases such as AMD. This study aims to determine the role of carotenoids as the prevention of macular degeneration. The method used is a literature review in the form of a narrative review. Search literature in the form of journals and textbooks through Google Scholar, PubMed, Science Direct, and Research Gate, indexed by Scopus, ISSN, national journals and international journals. The journals used were published in the last 5 years and books published in the last 10 years. The results of the analysis show that carotenoid antioxidants are proven to be able to act as a prevention of AMD by reducing oxidative stress. Carotenoids will quench free radicals, thereby preventing the occurrence of lipid peroxidation, and preventing the formation of AMD. Carotenoids also prevent damage mediated by exposure to blue light. Consumption of lutein and zeaxanthin can also reduce the expression of VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) in the retina so that it can inhibit the increase of VEGF. It can be concluded that carotenoid antioxidants can prevent the progression of macular degeneration.
Technological rapidly developments influence in lifestyle changes of people who do sedentary lifestyles. Lack of physical activity can reduce the value of VO2max, so that will impact on lowering physical fitness index. Value of VO2max can be increased through consumption of red watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) that is contained citrulline. Red watermelon is the richest source of citrulline compared to other fruits or vegetable on cucurbitaceae plants. Substance of citrulline that enters the body is converted to nitric oxide (NO) which can increase VO2max through the mechanism of oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria. This study is to know the effect of red watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) to VO2max. This paper is a qualitative study of literature. Bibliography like articles and literature books were obtained through the Elsevier, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar search engines. The result of analysis shows that the consumption of red watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) affects of VO2max enhancement. Nutrients of citrulline, which is contained in red watermelon, increases NO bioavailability and has an effect on increasing VO2max. In conclusion consumption of red watermelon juice (Citrullus lanatus) affects to value of VO2max.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
