ekonomie, sociologie a práva Socio-spatial Structures Between Persistency and Change. Historical and Contemporary Perspectives on Brno Abstract: Contemporary urban transition research on East Central Europe and Eastern Germany focuses, first of all, on change. Although it is more and more accepted that different societal spheres are characterised by distinct paces of transformation, long-term perspectives on intra-urban structures are rare. Investigations of continuities and persistencies of ‚older' structures and patterns are mostly reduced to comparisons between post-socialist and pre-1990 patterns. Yet, in the cities in transition a longer historical perspective is needed in order to understand their present socio-spatial differentiation. After reconsidering several studies on residential segregation in the ‚socialist cities' of East Central Europe and Eastern Germany, the article focuses on respective developments in the second largest city of the Czech Republic, Brno.
