A reliable seedling bioassay was developed and tested for the rapid screening for resistance to aryloxyphenoxypropionic (APP) herbicides in Alopecurus myosuroides and Lolium spp. populations. It is based upon the difference in coleoptile length of resistant and susceptible A. myosuroides and Lolium seedlings, respectively, exposed to fenoxaprop‐P acid and diclofop acid solution for 6 days in a plastic box. A 6 mg L−1 fenoxaprop‐P acid solution was selected as the best concentration for a reliable screening of resistant biotypes within A. myosuroides populations. At this concentration, coleoptile lengths of susceptible and resistant seedlings were shorter and longer than 10 mm respectively. Similarly, resistant seedlings within Lolium populations were easily detected at 10 mg L−1 diclofop acid. At this concentration, coleoptile lengths of susceptible and resistant seedlings were shorter and longer than 20 mm respectively. For both populations, the coleoptile length distributions appear to discriminate between two kinds of APP‐resistant biotypes (highly and slightly resistant).

Enhanced activity of several herbicide-degrading enzymes: a suggested mechanism responsible for multiple resistance in blackgrass (Alopecurus myosuroides Huds. Abstract -Experiments were carried out to analyse enhanced herbicide metabolism mediated by cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450(s)) or glutathione-S transferases (GST(s)) as a possible mechanism responsible for multiple resistance in three blackgrass populations. The RA population is resistant to aryloxyphenoxypropionates (fops) and flupyrsulfuron, the RB to fenoxaprop-P, flupyrsulfuron and ureas and the RC to fenoxaprop-P, haloxyfop and clodinafop. Based on the coleoptile length, growth responses of seedlings to the herbicide responsible for resistance and to combined treatments of the herbicide plus P450(s) or GST(s), inhibitors were compared. Growth of the RA seedlings was significantly reduced with flupyrsulfuron plus malathion, suggesting that P450(s) activity may be involved in the resistance. In contrast, none of the four inhitors tested had an effect on the fop resistance. Fenoxaprop-P plus tridiphane, flupyrsulfuron plus malathion and ureas plus PBO or ABT significantly reduced the RB coleoptiles' growth. Therefore, multiple resistance in this population may be due to an elevation of P450(s) and GST(s) activity. In the RC population, PBO, ABT and tridiphane synergised clodinafop, haloxyfop and fenoxaprop-P effects, suggesting that the two enzymatic systems may also be involved in the RC resistances. multiple herbicide resistance / enhanced herbicide detoxification / P450(s)/GST(s) / Alopecurus myosuroides Huds.Résumé -L'amplification d'enzymes de détoxication des herbicides : un mécanisme possible responsable des résistances multiples chez le vulpin (Alopecurus myosuroides Huds.).
International audienceIn an agricultural system with low herbicide input, prediction of the timing of annual weed developmental stages would be useful to predict weed growth rate and seed production, or to determine the appropriate timing for the application of foliar herbicides in order to optimize their use and avoid secondary effects of herbicide treatment such as water pollution or herbicide resistance. A model based on thermal time with a $1 ^\circ{\rm C}$ base temperature has been proposed to describe the rate of appearance of leaves and tillers on the main stem of black-grass (Alopecurus myosuroides Huds.). Our data suggest that the variability in developmental rate is relatively low between plants within a trial, but that the leaf appearance rate varies according to the sowing dates and the growth conditions. According to the sowing dates, phyllochron values vary from 60 to 99 degree days per leaf, whereas tiller developmental rates vary from 66 to 95 degree days. The combined action of cumulative radiation and photoperiod can modify phyllochron values. According to the date of emergence in the field, two different phyllochron values apparently describe black-grass development rates for the population in this study.
