Im Zusammenhang mit der Kolonialisierung beginnen Europäer sich für die Kunstund Architekturgeschichte Südasiens zu interessieren und diese systematisch zu studieren. Zu den frühesten Berichten über die südasiatische Architektur gehört A Dissertation on the Prototypes of Architecture, Hindoo, Moorish, and Gothic (1787) des britischen Landschaftsmalers William Hodges (1744–1797). Die kurze Abhandlung setzt sich von früheren deskriptiven Berichten ab, da Hodges versucht, seine Beobachtungen zur Architektur Südasiens in einen größeren architekturtheoretischen Rahmen zu stellen. Ins Französische und Deutsche übersetzt, verbreitet sich Hodges’ Abhandlung über nicht-europäische Architektur in Europa und trägt dazu bei, das Bild Südasiens nicht nur in England, sondern auch in Deutschland zu prägen. Der Artikel betrachtet Hodges’ Dissertation als einflussreichen Vorläufer der systematischeren und bekannteren Studien des 19. Jahrhunderts. Indem er diesen Schlüsseltext und Hodges Argumentation kritisch analysiert, gibt der Artikel nicht nur Einblicke in einen frühen Moment der Lesart südasiatischer Architektur, sondern arbeitet auch ihre Rolle bei der Schaffung eines Bildes der südasiatischen Architektur heraus.
