La ataxia de Friederich es una enfermedad hereditaria neurodegenerativa, caracterizada por el deterioro de las células nerviosas, relacionada con bajos niveles de proteína fraxatina. Sus consecuencias implican disminución progresiva de fuerza muscular, coordinación y disfunción del desempeño ocupacional. El artículo describe la intervención de Terapia Ocupacional con dos pacientes diagnosticadas con esta enfermedad. Esta fue realizada por estudiantes de la Universidad Federal de Sergipe en Lagarto, Brasil, durante su formación curricular en rehabilitación física de adultos; utilizaron la actividad graduada y el enfoque compensatorio, ambos pertenecientes al Modelo Biomecánico. Se adelantaron sesiones de 50 minutos, dos veces por semana, desde octubre de 2014 a febrero de 2015, en la Clínica de Terapia Ocupacional de la Universidad. Los resultados se evaluaron utilizando la Medida de Independencia Funcional, la prueba de fuerza muscular de Kendall y mediciones de rango de movimiento, siguiendo el protocolo de goniometria de Pascoal. Después de cinco meses de intervención, se observó el aumento de puntuación en la Medida de Independencia Funcional, mantenimiento de la fuerza muscular y la amplitud de movimiento; fue notable un mejor rendimiento en el desempeño de las actividades de la vida diaria, destacando la importancia del papel del terapeuta ocupacional con pacientes con esta patología.
