The influence of different annealing treatments on the crystalline order of isotactic paracrystalline polypropylene is described. The result support an intramolecular transformation mechanism based on a rewinding of helical segments of different lengths having opposite senses of spiralization. Such a mechanism is in agreement with the annealing time dependence of a particular order parameter and is sensitive to the temperature and not to the annealing time once the saturation order value is reached. This saturation phenomenon occurs very quickly at the higher temperatures. I n the course of a study on the structural variations joined t o the transition, accomplished by annealing the paracrystalline isotactic polypropylene (quenched from the melt), into the monoclinic crystal form, we have especially employed the small and wide angle X-ray diffraction techniques 1 7 2).To further define the singular aspects of this transformation we have also studied the dependence of the polymer order degree from the annealing conditions, i.e. how the different thermal treatments influence the percent of the developed monoclinic form.
DSC investigations on isotactic polypropylene (ir-PP) quenched from the melt and annealed over a range of temperatures are reported. The results confirm the existence of saturation levels of the ordered phase for different annealing temperatures, previously revealed by X-ray diffraction methods.Thermal, X-ray diffraction, and density data are correlated in terms of the extent of the ordered phase present in the it-PP.
S U M M A R Y :By X-ray diffraction and by density measurements as well as by differential scanning calorimetry, the crystallization phenomena of 6-polyamide(nylon-6) samples, obtained under different conditions were investigated.Particularly we have analyzed a method for the quantitative determination of the a, y, and 6 (amorphous) phases. This was based on the decomposition of the areas of the X-ray diffraction patterns. These data were related with density and calorimetric measurements and finally gave a good picture of the transitions involving the different phases. We have used this method for the characterization of nylon-6 of low and medium viscosity and we have considered the differences of behaviour between the various series of samples.
