Les données ethnographiques sont le produit de l’expérience de l’anthropologue sur son terrain, ainsi que des positions théoriques et méthodologiques qui informent son regard. Pourtant, les choix du chercheur ne sont pas simplement le fruit de raisonnements transparents, mais aussi d’impensés ou de refoulements produits en réponse à des situations particulièrement angoissantes. À travers le retour sur une ethnographie menée au sein d’une association indienne mapuche de Santiago du Chili, cet article propose d’analyser les conditions de production de ces matériaux. L’intérêt est de revenir sur les principales impasses rencontrées dans ce parcours, pour dévoiler les mécanismes d’évitement qu’elles ont induits, leurs effets sur la production des données, mais aussi le type de connaissance qu’on peut dégager, a posteriori, par la reprise de ce matériau refoulé. Finalement, au lieu de les considérer comme des erreurs méthodologiques, cet article propose d’explorer le potentiel épistémologique du trouble et de ses effets pour la connaissance anthropologique.
