Wir leben in einer Zeit des digitalisierten kulturellen und wissenschaftlichen Erbes in Archiven, Bibliotheken und Museen. Die Digitalisierung ist Chance und Herausforderung zugleich, sie ist die Kernaufgabe dieser Kultureinrichtungen. Die Frage des Zugangs zu digitalen Sammlungen unterliegt einer dynamischen Entwicklung (Hagedorn-Saupe/Schweibenz 2015: 59). Der englische Begriff "Oral History" ("mündlich überlieferte Geschichte") bezeichnet eine Methode, Zeitzeuginnen und Zeitzeugen zu befragen, Interviews mit ihnen aufzuzeichnen und wissenschaftlich auszuwerten. Mündliche Quellen jedoch sind nicht nur als Ergänzung notwendig, wenn anderer Quellen fehlen, sondern sie sind auch notwendig, wie Alexander von Plato bemerkt hat, weil die individuelle und kollektive Erfahrung eine eigene Dimension ist, die Verhaltensweisen und Orientierungen schafft die historische Prozesse wesentlich mitbestimmen (von Plato 2012: 8). Für die Alltags-und Erinnerungsberichte sind Zeitzeugenberichte eine unverzichtbare Quelle. Über die nationalsozialistischen Lager wüssten wir ohne die Zeitzeugenberichte nur wenig. Als wissenschaftliche Methode wurde die Oral History zunächst in den USA entwickelt. Interviewtechnik und Interpretationsmethoden der Oral History wurden seit Mitte der 1980er Jahren verfeinert und auch auf Video-Interviews erweitert. Der bekannte Historiker des Holocaust Saul Friedländer hat in seinem Werk Das Dritte Reich und die Juden die Integration der Welt der Opfer in der Geschichtsdarstellung befürwortet, was man als akademische Anerkennung der Oral History in diesem Feld verstehen kann (Friedländer 2007). Die wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit Zeitzeugeninterviews ist seit den 1990er Jahren intensiviert. Ein wichtiger Schritt dafür war die Entstehung eines digitalen Archivs mit 52.000 lebensgeschichtlichen Videozeugnissen, das Visual History Archive der Shoah Foundation Institute for Visual History and Education der University of Southern California (USC) (Nägel 2009).
