Pretendemos aqui analisar a trajetória da disciplina Educação Física nas escolas do Instituto dos Irmãos das Escolas Cristãs (lassalistas), criadas no Rio Grande do Sul (1908-1945). Nossa hipótese é de que esses irmãos acompanharam e procuraram se enquadrar na política pública de construção do novo homem brasileiro com base na educação escolar, inserindo a Gymnastica no currículo, com exercícios físicos entendidos como regeneradores e preventivos, tanto para a educação moral quanto para moldar o corpo dos meninos. Escolhemos duas escolas como indício do que ocorria nas demais. O estudo insere-se no campo da história da educação, iniciando com breve histórico da Educação Física como disciplina escolar no Brasil. Após, analisamos a trajetória desta no Ginásio Nossa Senhora das Dores e no Instituto São José, dialogando, com base nos conceitos de currículo e cultura escolar, com as seguintes fontes históricas: fotografias datadas entre o ano de 1908 e 1945, inseridas nos Livros Memoriais (1908-1949; 1908-1950) das escolas; Relatório de Termo de Inspeção do Instituto São José (1940); e documentos legais. Os lassalistas investiram na inserção da Educação Física em suas escolas, buscando formar meninos robustos, saudáveis, disciplinados e preparados para o trabalho.
