Hilge Landweer untersucht phänomenologisch, wie eng Scham und Macht verbunden sind. Sie zeigt, daß Normen über Scham leiblich verankert sind und oft erst durch Scham erkennbar werden. " Soweit der Klappentext dieses 1999 erschienenen Buches, mit dem sich die Autorin in die derzeit rege geführte wissenschaftliche Diskussion um das Gefühl der Scham einklinkt. Anders als die meisten der psychologischen, psychoanalytischen, sozialpsychologischen und philosophischen Abhandlungen über das Schamgefühl bemüht sich Landweer, unter Verzicht auf oftmals schwer überprüfbare, voraussetzungsreiche psychologische Kategorien, von konkreten Phänomenen auszugehen. Unter "Phänomen" versteht sie im Anschluss an Hermann Schmitz das, "was bei jeder Variation beliebiger Annahmen unveränderlich so sich aufdrängt, daß sein Vorkommen nicht im Ernst abgestritten werden kann". 2 Den ersten Teil ihres Buches widmet Landweer dem Phänomen "Scham". Es sei nicht zu bestreiten -wie der Ausgangspunkt und (nach eingehender Prüfung) zugleich eines der Ergebnisse der Autorin lautet -, dass ein von Scham betroffenes Subjekt sich stets für etwas und vor jemandem schämt. Mit dem als zweiten genannten Punkt dieser nur auf den ersten Blick simpel erscheinenden Aussage spricht Landweer auf die Sozialität der Scham an, die sie gewissermaßen als in der Struktur des Gefühls selbst verankert unterstellt.Mit der "offenkundigen Sozialität" dieses Gefühls (4) ist der Weg für die Untersuchung des Zusammenhanges zwischen Scham und Macht freigegeben.
