Kinderen met een taalontwikkelingsstoornis (TOS) hebben problemen met het begrijpen en/of produceren van taal. Door de problemen bij de verwerving van de verschillende taalniveaus (fonologie, semantiek, syntaxis, morfologie, pragmatiek) wordt de ontwikkeling van het metalinguïstisch bewustzijn vermoedelijk negatief beïnvloed. Het overdragen van expliciete informatie in de communicatie is moeilijk voor TOS-kinderen. 'Communicatie via Scherm' (CvS) is een behandelingswijze met een metalinguïstische benadering voor kinderen met taalontwikkelingsstoornissen. Het doel van de interventie is het stimuleren van de taalproductie en pragmatische vaardigheden van kinderen met een TOS. In dit onderzoek staat de doeltreffendheid van CvS centraal, waarbij met een 'onegroup pre-and posttest design' onderzocht is of kinderen met een TOS van 6, 7 en 8 jaar hun metalinguïstisch gedrag veranderen na interventie met CvS. Ook is er onderzocht of de metalinguïstische interventie een groei in de talige informatieoverdracht, namelijk in de (werk)woordkeuze en de argumentstructuur, laat zien. Gedurende 9 weken zijn negen TOS-kinderen 45 minuten per week behandeld met CvS. Voor en na de interventie zijn de kinderen getest met de 'Lexicale Minimale Paren Test' en de 'Actie Platen Test'. De resultaten tussen de twee meetmomenten zijn met elkaar vergeleken. Zeven TOSkinderen zijn na de interventie minder afhankelijk geworden van het sturende metalinguïstische gedrag van de behandelaar bij het overbrengen van hun boodschap. De TOSkinderen maken na de interventie significant meer gebruik van de metalinguïstische strategie 'zelfcorrectie'. Na de interventie is er sprake van een significante verbetering van (werk)woordkeuze en het gebruik van verplichte argumenten. Alhoewel de populatie van het onderzoek klein is om duidelijke conclusies te trekken, geven de resultaten een indicatie voor positieve effecten van een metalinguïstische drs.
