This paper discusses the status of information and communication technologies usage in Indian libraries with special reference to special libraries and the efforts made by various institutions to propagate e‐information products and services. This paper highlights the consortia efforts in India like JCCC Consortium, INDEST Consortium, CSIR E‐journal Consortia, and UGC Infonet. It further discusses digitisation efforts in India at NISCAIR, New Delhi, IIITM, Kerala, C‐DAC Pune, and the Digital Library of India. In addition it incorporates details on major information systems in India (such as NISSAT)and major library networks in India (such as INFLIBNET, DELNET, CALIBNET etc.). The paper concludes with challenges for library and information science professionals and an overview of initiatives taken by Government of India.
Highlights the value of human resources in knowledge management. Describes the knowledge accessibility problems of developing countries and depicts the Indian scenario of knowledge management problems. The DAISY Consortium, project NOVA and several other initiatives facilitate knowledge access even for disadvantaged people and hence there is no dearth of technologies for knowledge access. Problems of knowledge accessibility arise due to uneven access to technology which leads to the digital divide. Indicates the efforts being made at the international level to overcome such problems and concludes that there is a need to develop ICT infrastructure for tackling knowledge management problems of developing countries.
This paper aims to explain how the concept of diversity has been covered in the professional literature and discusses how diversity has been understood and implemented in the context of tribal community libraries, public libraries, academic libraries and school libraries and the diversity statistics of library professionals. The paper highlights some prominent issues of diversity in libraries, such as: staffing; recruitment and retention; recruitment of students and faculty of color to library schools; library services and organization climate. The paper concludes by mentioning some challenges the library profession is facing, such as lack of representation of minorities among students and faculty, and makes recommendations to overcome these challenges.
