Der Film La Grande Bellezza handelt von einem 65-jährigen alleinstehenden Feuilleton-Journalisten, in seiner Jugend Autor eines einzigen Buches, der seit Jahrzehnten als »König der Mondänen« seinen Lustbarkeiten und Routinen im Kreis der römischen High Society nachgeht, stets auf der Suche nach der großen Schönheit. Die Nachricht vom Tod seiner Jugendliebe, an die er immer fixiert blieb, lässt ihn angesichts seines fortschreitenden Alters die Sinnlosigkeit seines Daseins spüren und führt zur Suche nach etwas Neuem. Der Film wird als zweischichtiges Geschehen analysiert, bei dem die Schönheit der Bilder und die histrionische Hülle des narzisstischen Protagonisten die schmerzhafte Auseinandersetzung mit dem Anerkennen der Vergänglichkeit und ungelebter Anteile wie eine Maske überdeckt.
