Die Präsidenten der zentralasiatischen Staaten (mit Ausnahme Kirgistans) üben nicht nur seit vielen Jahren ein zentrales politisches Amt aus, sondern versuchen auch, ihre autoritäre Herrschaft mit Hilfe von Neuinterpretationen von Geschichte und Gegenwart zu legitimieren und sich zu unentbehrlichen Vätern und Beschützern ihrer Nationen zu stilisieren. Unter ihrem Namen publizierte Bücher, Denkmäler oder spezielle Feiertage sind Merkmale eines neuen Personenkultes, der zwar in jeder Republik seine eigene Ausprägung hat, in der Gesamtschau aber verblüffende Ähnlichkeiten aufweist.
Endlichkeit ist eine essentielle Erfahrung der menschlichen Existenz. Als universelles Reflexiv schließt sie individuelle wie kollektive Perspektiven ein, umgreift Zeit und Raum, Materielles wie Ideelles und ist zudem ein Resonanzraum für ethische Debatten. Endlichkeit bezeichnet nicht nur die individuelle existentielle Erfahrung der Sterblichkeit und deren Transzendierung, sondern Endlichkeitserfahrungen sind immer auch Bestandteil gesellschaftlicher Wahrnehmungen von Krisen. Dazu gehört auch die Erkenntnis der Begrenztheit natürlicher Ressourcen. Die Beiträge des Bandes untersuchen die Erfahrungen und den Umgang mit Endlichkeit in verschiedenen Epochen und Kulturen.
