The purpose of the study was to examine the extent to which royalties generated from forest resources contributed to community development in Boki Local Government area of Cross River State, Nigeria. The study used questionnaire survey of house-hold heads and Interview with focus groups to obtain data for this study. A total of 224 household heads representing 20 % of the available house-hold heads in the area was used for the study. The data collected were presented using tables and charts while an inferential statistics (Pearson's Product Moment correlation) was employed to test the hypothesis of the study. The result of the analysis revealed that there exist a positive correlation coefficient of 0.911 which indicates a strong and positive relationship between royalties collected from forest resources and the number of developmental projects in the study area. Based on the findings of this study, it was recommended that more efforts be directed towards the monitoring and regulation of forest resource exploration activities in the area to ensure that royalties collected are directed towards the establishment of more developmental projects in the area so as to impact more positively on the living standard of the people.
The paper aims to examine the efficiency of Calabar museum landscape for sustainable tourism development in Cross River State. Data collection was through interviews, museum registry and visitor's book. The processes were restricted to the Calabar museum which was purposively selected based on its location attributes and enormous cultural resources of the State. The findings clearly indicated a slight staggering trend and increase in domestic and international arrivals to Calabar museum from 2000 to 2015. The study observed that if the museum is fully developed it would ensure increment in visitors' traffic vis-脿-vis promote sustainable tourism in Cross River State. Furthermore it was discovered that the utilization of Calabar museum is basically for leisure, meetings and cultural exhibitions. This represented 18%, 17% and 13% respectively of the study population. However 88% of the visitors rated the museum as not good and efficient to attract tourists especially from other countries. Meanwhile, the study also established that museum is a vital tool used to promote the culture and tourism potentials of any destination and as such measures must be put on deck to upgrade and promote the museum in Nigeria.
This study examined tourists" arrivals in ecotourism sites and events within Cross River state, Nigeria. Data for the study were collected through questionnaire survey, interviews, field inventory and participatory rural appraisal methods. The data generated were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as mean, percentages, averages, graphs, charts, frequencies and maps while analysis of Variance was employed to determine the difference in the annual arrivals in the area. The findings reveal that a total of 27,326 tourists" visited the study locations between 2005 and 2015 and out of this number, the months of January, September and December have the highest recorded number of tourists" arrivals with 3015, 2549 and 3920 respectively. The participatory research appraisal shows that the variation in the number of tourists" arrivals in some of the months was attributed to the availability of traditional events. Based on this finding, it is recommended that more effort be made to organize more events in the state so that more tourists" would be attracted to visit the state and this will eliminate or reduce the effect of tourism seasonality in the state.
This study evaluated forest management institutions and their initiatives in the rainforest communities of Cross River State. Data were collected through questionnaire survey and participatory research methodologies. Data generated were analyzed using descriptive statistics and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The result of the analysis reveals that community forest management institutions and their initiatives have significant influence on forest ecosystem management than other institutions such as government and non-governmental organizations. The study discovered that community forest management institutions were rated very high in terms of sustainable harvesting techniques, encouragement of forest reservation and monitoring of forest management programmes among others. The other institutions were rated low in their influence on forest management. Based on these findings, the study suggested some remedial measures that will ensure sustainable forest management in the area, such as partnership forest management, alternative income generation opportunities and holistic consideration of the forest lands during management.
