This article offers statistical support for the contention that demographic risk factors influence the incidence of some women's experiencing violence more than others. Our results were generated using a binary probit model and 6,332 observations from the 1996 Australian Women's Safety Survey. For purposes of comparison, we identified a set of benchmark demographic characteristics as those occurring most frequently in the data set and estimated that if a woman were to have all of these characteristics, the probability she would have experienced violence in the past 12 months was 6.7%. We found that the risk varied with levels of postschool education, income, ethnic background, number and age of children, marital status, and age. Employment status, school-leaving age, and socioeconomic status had no statistically significant effect on the risk of experiencing violence once other factors were considered. This analysis may provide a basis for violence reduction and prevention programs.

The decline in number of female coaches has been a serious concern of women in sport. This study investigated whether gender of coach would influence high school female basketball players specifically in relation to their future coaching self-efficacy, the level of competition at which they might choose to coach, and their ideas about the purposes of basketball. Results revealed that gender of coach did not influence self-efficacy for coaching but did influence level of competition. Perceived playing ability was found to be the strongest predictor of future coaching self-efficacy. In addition, some differences were found between male- and female-coached athletes and between male and female coaches concerning perceived purposes of basketball.

Prenatal screening can significantly benefit parents and the community. However, it has created a dilemma for women as it requires them to quickly decide whether to continue a pregnancy or terminate it should the test indicate a foetal abnormality. This can be psychologically traumatic for women torn between their connection to an unborn child with all its possible imperfections, and a desire to prevent its suffering as a disabled child in later life. A woman must also consider her own and her family's future welfare. Extensive research into the physical aspects of prenatal screening has not explored the meaning of the experience for women or whether termination is the most appropriate option. This article examines recent qualitative studies, concluding that women who terminate a pregnancy following prenatal screening may experience an acute grief reaction or be plagued by guilt and fear that can precipitate marital breakdown. Additionally, there is a risk that through striving to eradicate congenital disability, a community risks promoting a cult of perfectionism that may have discriminatory effects on disabled people.
