O cooperativismo e a sustentabilidade são termos cada vez mais discutidos ao redor do mundo, principalmente, dentro das organizações e em pesquisas acadêmicas. A busca pelo equilíbrio entre os aspectos ambientais, sociais e econômicos tem sido uma constante nos empreendimentos ao passar dos anos. Tal contexto tem movido às organizações a adotarem iniciativas voltadas à sua sobrevivência, ao mesmo tempo, capazes de torná-las competitivas e aptas a encararem os desafios que surgem no ambiente onde atuam. Desse modo, considerando a importância das cooperativas e da sustentabilidade nos dias atuais, o presente estudo tem como objetivo verificar as características da produção acadêmica nos últimos 20 anos via análise na base de dados Web of Science. Para isso, a metodologia adotada tem como base a bibliometria e numa busca realizada por tópico resultou em 792 trabalhos encontrados no período. Os resultados obtidos evidenciam uma crescente preocupação com o tema ao longo do tempo, passando de 08 trabalhos no ano de 2000 para 119 em 2016. Ademais, a maioria dos estudos foi publicada na modalidade de artigo científico (596) e em termos de destaque acerca do número de publicações os Estados Unidos se sobressai – com 207 trabalhos – o Brasil ocupa a décima primeira posição no ranking com apenas 33 trabalhos. Portanto, é uma área de pesquisa que ainda tem margem para ser explorada no país.
