Neste estudo é analisado os conhecimentos prévios sobre resíduos sólidos apresentados por estudantes do 4º ano em mapas mentais e numa prova de questões abertas que serviram como elementos para a construção de uma sequência didática que fomentou no ambiente escolar a construção de significados mais próximos do contexto científico e a adoção de uma nova postura frente as questões ambientais. A análise qualitativa dos dados coletados demonstrou que os significados pessoais iniciais convergem para a experiência da vivência cotidiana da organização do lixo, do recolhimento dele semanalmente nas residências, os termos utilizados no dia a dia e a acentuada dificuldade em expressar ideias em torno do campo conceitual de resíduos sólidos adequados a faixa etária e ao que se propõe progressivamente aos anos iniciais pela Base Nacional Comum Curricular (BNCC). Com base nos resultados viu-se a necessidade de possibilitar um estudo a partir dos conhecimentos prévios dos estudantes de modo que possam construir significados que os familiarizem com ideias mais científicas.
